Best VPN for Android: Phone and Tablet Apps Ranked and Compared

Who leads the Android ranking and what separates them

Why X-VPN is second although Proton VPN has the higher overall score

This page puts 35% of the score on ecosystem, where X-VPN's platforms subindex hits 9.0. Under the standard weights of the overall score, Proton edges ahead.

Where each leader loses points

X-VPN's security subindex is 4.6: it states neither DNS leak protection, nor a security audit, nor open-source apps (only 48 of the 451 services have open-source apps). Proton loses privacy points because sign-up requires an email and connection IPs are stored temporarily for abuse checks. Both score near 2 on bypass: one stealth mode each, none of the newer censorship-proof protocols. CitadelVPN's weakest area is value, given the 14-day refund window and the 50 GB monthly cap on PRO.

Android's own switches: Always-on VPN and blocking traffic

Under Settings → Network & internet → VPN, tap the gear next to your app. Always-on (since Android 7.0) raises the tunnel at boot, before you open anything. Block connections without VPN works as a system kill switch the app cannot forget: if the tunnel dies on a train, the phone cuts traffic rather than letting it out over mobile data. Apps left outside the tunnel then lose the network entirely. Some phones lack the system switch for a given app, so the provider's own kill switch becomes the fallback, and battery optimisation must not suspend the app. The numbers: a kill switch is confirmed by 178 of 451 services, 218 don't say; DNS leak protection by 116.

Split tunnelling on Android

Per-app VPN takes one list, and one only: allowed apps or disallowed apps, never both. Everyday use: keep a banking app on the raw network, because banks often flag VPN addresses, while the browser stays encrypted. Split tunnelling is confirmed by 147 services; 256 are silent.

Protocols to look for in an Android app

WireGuard without obfuscation won't survive DPI, so on filtered networks a stealth protocol beats cycling servers. Manual configuration files, offered by 109 services, help with routers and third-party clients; one typo in such a file and the connection is dead.

Reading a Google Play listing

A 4.5 star badge can hide the recent average: for X-VPN, 1,706 collected reviews average 4.14 with 288 negative; for Proton, 2,400 average 4.24 against a 4.7 badge. Check that the developer on Google Play matches the provider, since lookalike copies of big brands appear in the store, and look at permissions: a VPN needs network access, not contacts or SMS. Ad-funded free tiers share data with ad networks; X-VPN lists AdMob, InMobi, Chartboost and Liftoff. APK files are safe only when downloaded from the provider's own site.

Google Play billing or the provider: renewals and refunds

An in-app subscription is billed and cancelled inside Google Play, while refund rules belong to the provider, and they can diverge: Proton refunds only direct purchases, X-VPN takes requests for the first subscription via Google Play, PayPal or Stripe, crypto excluded. Auto-renewal is the default for most (170 yes, 18 no), and renewal prices bite: Proton's Plus renews at $83.88 per year, roughly double the intro rate. Across this page, paid plans range from €0.36 a month at the low end, median €2.86. Some 247 services state a money-back period in days; 163 of the 451 explain how to cancel.

Free Android VPNs

Free plans exist for 225 of the 451 services, and 116 confirm ads in the free tier. Proton's free version runs without advertising and without data limits on one device. The separate free Android VPN list ranks those on their own.

FAQ

The short version

CitadelVPN leads here, followed by X-VPN, then Proton VPN, which takes second place on the overall score. Flip on Always-on and the system block, confirm a real stealth protocol for blocked networks, and check the renewal and refund terms rather than the star badge. An independent no-logs audit exists for just 35 of 451 services; the no-logs VPNs for Android list starts there.
