Best VPN for Netflix: Ranking the Providers That Claim It Works

Top three for Netflix by page score

The page weights network at 40%, privacy at 20%, security at 13%, price and censorship bypass at 10% each and apps and support at 7%.

What holds each of them back

All three have cleared an external no-logs audit and offer TV apps. CitadelVPN's refund lasts 14 days against 30 at the other two; its five-day cardless trial is where you find out whether Netflix plays. Proton VPN owns the widest map of the three but offers no trial, and the monthly price roughly doubles once the first term renews. X-VPN loses security points: no published security audit and no published DNS leak protection.

How Netflix reacts to a VPN connection

A VPN makes your device appear somewhere else, and Netflix responds by shrinking the catalogue. Per its VPN help article, only titles it licenses worldwide appear until the tunnel is off. Live events and the ad-supported plan are unsupported over a VPN entirely. A proxy error screen is another common report. No VPN provider can change Netflix's rule on live events and the ad-supported plan.

Netflix, Hulu and Disney+ on holiday

Travelling with Netflix needs no VPN. Phones and laptops work as usual, and a hotel or holiday-rental TV lets you sign in. Once you leave the country you signed up in, the catalogue, downloads and audio and subtitle options follow the country you are in; My List and Continue Watching titles may go missing, saved downloads may not play, and maturity ratings follow the visited country.

Inside the European Union the picture changes. Regulation (EU) 2017/1128, in force since 2018, obliges paid services to give an EU subscriber staying temporarily in another member state the same content, device range, user count and features as at home, with no extra charge. A Disney+ subscription bought in an EU country falls under the same rule. Netflix's travel help page says the same for its members: inside the EU you get your home country's content for a limited period. The law only travels with the subscription you already pay for at home; another country's library stays out of reach. To decide where you live, the provider checks at sign-up and at each renewal, using no more than two proofs such as card details, an ID document or a billing address. Picture quality is not guaranteed beyond the local connection.

Hulu is the exception. Its help page on international use ties an account to one US household and a US-issued payment method. Hulu streams anywhere in the US, in Puerto Rico and on US military bases, and it refuses connections through a VPN, proxy or anonymiser. Live TV does not stream abroad at all.

What to check before paying

• Streaming servers: 28 of the 97 maintain them, and only Proton among the top three names Netflix regions (US, UK, France).
• TV apps decide whether Netflix works on the big screen without router setup: 18 services each cover Android TV, Fire TV and Apple TV, and 40 offer router support.
• A trial without a card (15 confirm one) or a money-back guarantee (76 publish terms), so you can see whether your catalogue opens before the money is gone.
• Auto-renewal is on by default at 43 services, so note the renewal date when you sign up.

The 97 providers in numbers

Paid plans start at €0.71 a month, with the median at €2.83.

Free VPNs and Netflix

Thirty-five of the 97 offer a free plan, and ads are confirmed in 12 of them. Proton's free tier gives unlimited data but reserves streaming for paid plans, and X-VPN's free version shows adverts and skips sign-up.

FAQ

Which Netflix VPN to pick

Take CitadelVPN for the top score and the five-day no-card trial. Take Proton VPN for the largest network, with streaming servers marked for the US, UK and France, and budget for the renewal jump. Take X-VPN when a static IP in the Premium plan matters more to you than its thin published security record. Free tiers rarely suit streaming, and the ad-supported plan and live events stay out of reach over any VPN.
