Static IP VPN Services: Who Keeps Your Address Fixed, and How
A static IP VPN gives you one exit address that returns on every connect, so a bank allowlist, an office firewall or an admin panel can recognise you. Of 543 consumer services surveyed by VPNRadarLab, only 50 even claim to offer such an address, and they mean different things by it: some share the fixed exit among subscribers, some reserve it for one customer. Static, Dedicated and Dynamic: What Changes Between Connections
An ordinary VPN server picks your exit from a pool at each connect, so the address can differ every session, and a changing address can trigger extra CAPTCHAs and login checks; home lines behave the same way, since DHCP hands out addresses as time-limited leases (RFC 2131). A static exit ends the hopping. Dedicated goes further: the address belongs to one customer. Every dedicated address is static, but a static one can still be shared, and that distinction matters more than the label. Here, static describes the exit address of the VPN server you connect to, not your own home line.
Four Ways Providers Hand Out a Fixed Address
| Delivery model | What you get | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Shared static exit | same address each session, other users on it | SwitchVPN |
| Personal static bundled into a tier | your own address, in the plan price | X-VPN Premium |
| Personal static as a paid add-on | your own address, billed on top | PureVPN, KeepSolid |
| Arranged by support or via own server | semi-manual terms, sometimes your own hardware | ZenVPN, SwissVPN |
Across the ranking, 44 services offer a dedicated IP, three offer none and three do not say. Seventeen state a port forwarding add-on, which matters if the fixed address is for inbound traffic such as remote desktop; see the VPNRadarLab port forwarding ranking.
Shared Static Exits: Same Address, Other People on It
A shared static exit keeps some crowd cover, but it inherits other users' reputation and any blocklisting they earn. SwitchVPN sells this shared address on all its plans; CactusVPN, SmartyDNS and SwitchVPN all list no dedicated option, and S6N (Arethusa) uses semi-dynamic shared IPv4, which is closer to a pool than a fixed line. Fine for one firewall rule, fragile for anything sensitive to blocklists.
When the Address Is Your Own Server
ZenVPN gives you your own server plus a static IP, and SwissVPN a public Swiss IP without NAT under a signed contract. Static residential options (StarVPN, CometVPN) exist for sites that flag hosting ranges.
Top Three for a Static IP
| X-VPN | PureVPN | NordVPN | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Score | 6.44 | 6.05 | 6.01 |
| Jurisdiction | Singapore | BVI | Panama |
| Fixed IP | included in Premium | add-on from $2.49/mo | add-on, priced at checkout |
| Cheapest plan | €2.57/mo (24 mo) | €1.85/mo (27 mo) | €3.00/mo (27 mo) |
| Renewal | not stated | $47.95/yr (1.86×) | $139.08/yr (3.32×) |
| Refund | 30 days | 31 days | 30 days |
| No-logs | ISAE 3000 attestation | KPMG audit | verified 5 times |
| Servers | 10000+, 80+ countries | 6000+, 65+ countries | 7115, 150 countries |
All three sit outside the 5/9/14 Eyes and lead mainly because the network carries 40% of the score and each runs a large one. X-VPN and PureVPN publish no security audit, no open-source apps and no two-factor sign-in; NordVPN loses points on terms, since its renewal is 3.32 times the introductory price. None offers more than obfuscation against blocking, and the score is built from published data rather than speed or unblocking tests.
What a Fixed Address Costs in Privacy
A personal static IP ties every session to the paying account, and the payment method links it to your identity further, so crypto is the mitigation where accepted. PureVPN keeps dedicated IP records for 25 days after the subscription ends. Only 10 of the 50 services here have an independent no-logs audit, and 22 have none.
When a Static IP Is Worth It, and When It Is Not
A fixed address pays off for allowlisted banking and brokerage logins, office firewalls that accept one source address, and remote administration of servers or cloud consoles. For streaming, torrenting or general anonymity it adds little, and inbound hosting needs port forwarding on top of the address.
Checks Before You Buy
- Find out whether the address is shared or personal; sales pages blur this.
- Check that your country appears on the fixed-IP list, which is shorter than the server map.
- See whether the add-on falls under the refund window.
- Look up the renewal price, not the introductory one.
- Expect a typical static exit to sit in a data-centre range; only 7 of the 50 state residential addresses.
FAQ
Can a static IP VPN be free?
Almost never. iTop VPN lists free dedicated IPs in the UK, US, Canada and Germany, which is the exception among the surveyed services; elsewhere a fixed address is a paid tier or add-on.
Does a static IP include port forwarding?
Not part of every static IP offer. Some plans include it outright (OVPN bundles up to 7 ports, TorGuard includes ports above 2048), others charge for it as an add-on, and without it nothing reaches your device from outside.
Will a static IP stop CAPTCHAs and blocks?
It may cut them, because your address stops hopping between sessions, but a data-centre range can still be challenged. VPNRadarLab does not test this; treat the benefit as a provider claim.
Short Answer
Pick the model first: shared static for one allowlist entry, a personal static from a tier or an add-on for banking and administration, a rented server for hosting. Compare add-on prices and country lists in the VPNRadarLab dedicated IP ranking. A personal address points every session back to one account, so weigh the privacy before buying.
