Best VPN for Torrenting: P2P Rules, Port Forwarding and Logs Compared

Top 3 VPNs for torrenting by page score

All three sit outside surveillance alliances, ship a kill switch and publish an audit. The catches differ: CitadelVPN caps the entry tier at 50 GB monthly, Proton doubles its price to $83.88 a year after two years and bars free users from torrents, while PureVPN renews at 1.86× the intro rate, sells forwarding separately, and turns its trial into a paid plan automatically.

Why network speed decides this ranking

Network takes 40% of the page score, twice the privacy share. That lifts PureVPN, 7th overall, to 3rd here with a network sub-score of 7.6. Proton holds the strongest network figure of all 107 services (8.7) yet loses ground on privacy (6.0 against CitadelVPN's 9.3), partly over brief IP logging for fraud checks and the email required at sign-up. NordVPN (6.01) and Surfshark (5.94) follow at 4th and 5th.

What the 107 services actually allow

61 of the ranked providers state P2P is fine in writing, 14 attach conditions, and 32 say nothing. 49 run dedicated P2P servers, 20 offer port forwarding, 67 ship a kill switch, 14 have SOCKS5, which hides your IP but leaves torrent traffic visible to the ISP. Only 12 have an independent audit confirming their no-logs claim. Prices run from €0.57 to a €3.22 median.

P2P everywhere, on P2P servers only, or on paid plans only

Check the server label before launching the client: a torrent on a non-P2P server may die or crawl.

Port forwarding and seeding

A swarm exposes every peer's IP to every other peer. If your port stays closed, the client can only reach outward, so rare torrents stall and seeding stays one-sided. An incoming port on the VPN server's public IP makes you connectable; CitadelVPN and Proton include it, PureVPN asks from $1.49 a month. The provider assigns the number, and you enter it where the client listens. The full list lives in the port forwarding ranking.

Logs that matter for torrenting

Anti-piracy firms harvest swarm IPs together with a timestamp. A provider storing your connection IP and session times can tie both to your account: 13 services here log the connection IP (8 more partially), 24 keep session times. Among the top three, CitadelVPN keeps neither but tracks a per-account traffic balance; Proton holds the connection IP only briefly, with no bandwidth records; PureVPN skips the connection IP yet stores bandwidth totals and the connection date.

How to set up a torrent client behind a VPN

1. Connect to a P2P-enabled server before starting the client.
2. Enable forwarding in the VPN app, then put the assigned number into the client's port setting.
3. Tie the client to the VPN network interface (qBittorrent: Advanced, Network interface) so it stops when the tunnel drops. Proton's BitTorrent guide walks through this on Windows, macOS and Linux.
4. Run an IP checker and confirm the swarm sees the VPN address.

VPN for torrenting FAQ

Short answer: which VPN to use for torrenting

CitadelVPN includes port forwarding but caps the cheapest plan at 50 GB monthly. Proton VPN posts the best network sub-score on the page, yet free users cannot torrent and renewals double in price. PureVPN grants a 31-day money-back window across 6000+ servers, but P2P only on marked servers and forwarding costs extra. Check the written P2P rule, set up forwarding if you seed, and tie the client to the tunnel.
