Why iPlayer refuses to play on a VPN

iPlayer checks whether your IP address is registered in the UK. A foreign address brings up the "outside the UK" screen, but so does a British address that looks like a VPN or proxy, and the BBC's own advice is to switch the tunnel off. Work and university networks, mobile browser data-saver modes and web accelerators can trigger the same error. Rights agreements are the root cause: streaming requires you to be in Britain even on holiday. Programmes downloaded in the app while you are in the UK play anywhere (BBC help).

Where the iPlayer claims come from

The TV licence and BBC rules

A licence is required to watch or download anything on iPlayer on any device, watching without one is a criminal offence with a fine up to £1,000 (S4C on demand is the exception).
