VPN Coupons and Promo Codes: Real Discounts vs the Renewal Price

A working public VPN coupon is rare. The "up to 85% off" on pricing pages is almost always the gap between a long prepaid plan and paying monthly for the same stretch, with no code involved. The figure that actually matters is the subscription's cost once the first term ends.

Where "up to 85% off" comes from

Take the monthly price, multiply it by the length of a two-year plan, and put the prepaid total next to that sum. The resulting percentage gets printed as the headline discount. VPNRadarLab's main ranking covers 377 services; 155 state what the saving is measured against, and 121 of those use the monthly price as the yardstick, while 27 compare against a crossed-out list price and 7 against the renewal price. The arithmetic is honest, but it describes a comparison most long-term customers never face. The median of the largest percentage shown is about 59%; 67 services advertise 70% off or more, 33 of them 80% or more.

Do working VPN promo codes exist

Sometimes, but rarely as a code you type in. Of the 377 services, 34 publish something about coupons, usually a blank field at checkout or a code already embedded in the plan link, and some published codes carry a short expiry date. A checkout field proves only that the shop can process codes; whether one circulates today is a different matter. The table on this page covers the 151 services with a coupon page or section on VPNRadarLab: 33 rows contain any promo-code information, 118 show a discount figure, and 27 have nothing published yet. VPNRadarLab records only what each provider shows on its own site and does not collect codes from third-party coupon sites or test them.

Coupon sites and affiliate links

Affiliate programmes run at 127 of the 377 services, paying commission to sites that send buyers their way. That is why one headline offer shows up on a dozen coupon pages within the same week, sometimes labelled "exclusive". Nothing dishonest in itself, but when a third-party page promises more than the provider's own pricing page, believe the provider. VPNRadarLab carries no affiliate links, so this text has no stake in which plan you pick.

What happens when the first term ends

The renewal ratio is the renewal price per month divided by the first-term monthly rate. A value near 1 means no surprise at renewal. Of the 48 services that publish both a headline percentage and this ratio, 40 advertise 50% off or more. Twenty of those 40 renew at 1.5 times the intro rate or higher, and 15 of them at double or more. Among the 8 advertising under 50%, one still renews at double or more. Aggressive headline discounts tend to come with steep follow-up pricing.

Hotspot Shield Premium is $29 for the first year, then $95.99 a year. Surfshark renews at a "renewal price" whose amount is not shown before purchase, which is a separate annoyance. Auto-renewal comes pre-enabled at 182 of the 377 services, so the higher price often arrives without a click on your side.

Sales, bonus months, student and crypto discounts

At the time of checking, 45 services showed a running sale (Halloween offers, countdown timers, "Limited Time" labels), and a few banners were stale leftovers from sales that ended years ago. A countdown clock does not mean the price will rise when the timer hits zero. Bonus months, added by 38 services to long plans (typically 2–4 free months on a two-year plan), lower the effective rate of the first term only. Student discounts appear at 13 providers, crypto payment discounts at 5 (about 10% at most of them); 352 services simply do not publish a student offer, and "not stated" means not published, not that it is missing.

How to check a VPN deal before you pay

1. Note the total you pay today and how many months it covers.
2. Find the renewal price in the terms or checkout small print; if hidden, ask support.
3. Confirm the money-back window. 254 of the 377 services offer a refund guarantee, which caps the risk of a long prepayment.
4. If you would rather renew manually, disable auto-renewal in your account.
5. Cross-check the provider's own coupon page, for instance Surfshark's.

The FTC's auto-renewal guide makes a narrower point about notices: if you already agreed to auto-renew, the reminder is not a bill, so it should not ask for your card details again, and one that does may be a scam or an attempt to restart a subscription you cancelled.

FAQ

Is there a VPN coupon that works right now?

Check the provider's own site first. A published code may sit there with a short expiry date; third-party lists mostly restate the default long-plan deal.

Are VPN coupon sites legitimate?

They route you to the provider's checkout, where prices are set officially, and most earn affiliate commission when you buy. The deal itself comes from the provider.

Will the price go up when my plan renews?

At many providers, yes, sometimes by a factor of two or more. For a documented example, see the ExpressVPN coupon page.

Short answer

Skip the code hunt. Compare the total for the term, read the renewal price and the refund window, and judge the deal on what year two costs.
