What users say
Reviews never change our score. Ratings are smoothed: a source’s average across all VPNs counts as 50 extra reviews, so a few five-star reviews cannot outrank thousands.

Jurisdiction
TunnelBear sits at 3.59 out of 10 in the VPNRadarLab ranking, 62nd of 377 services, and it beats the typical consumer VPN in every scored area while finishing high on nothing. Its free plan is genuinely usable, capped at 2 GB a month, and Unlimited starts at $10.99 monthly or $3.33 a month on the three-year deal. In short: a solid everyday VPN with thin privacy proof, weak on censorship.
TunnelBear's score area by area
| Area | TunnelBear | Consumer median |
|---|---|---|
| Privacy and jurisdiction | 3.0 | 2.7 |
| Security and protocols | 3.9 | 2.1 |
| Price and fair terms | 4.8 | 3.5 |
| Network | 4.3 | 3.1 |
| Censorship bypass | 1.9 | 0.5 |
| Platforms and support | 4.7 | 4.3 |
Audited apps, a fair renewal structure and a large physical server network carry the good half. Privacy weighs 30% of the score, and the missing no-logs audit plus the Five Eyes home country are the two biggest single deductions in the whole result. Censorship bypass earns the least of all six areas because GhostBear is the only counted tool.
Privacy: a Canadian company and a no-logs promise nobody has audited
The operator is TunnelBear LLC with an address in Toronto, so Canadian law applies. The privacy policy says connection IP and session times are not stored. What is kept: your email, a monthly bandwidth total, device info like OS and app version, and operational analytics events. Data goes to service providers only, per the policy updated on 11 May 2026.
Beyond that, the record is thin. VPNRadarLab has no independent audit of the no-logs claim on file (the single heaviest item at 3 points). TunnelBear does not publish a warrant canary, a transparency report or a way to sign up without an email. Canada is a Five Eyes country, so the 2 alliance points earn nothing. An annual security audit does not substitute for an outside check of the logging promise.
Security, protocols and GhostBear
Security scores 3.9 out of 10 (5.5 of 14 raw points), well above the 2.1 consumer median. The provider claims annual independent security audits and says the seventh has been completed, runs a kill switch called VigilantBear that cuts traffic when the tunnel drops, and offers WireGuard, OpenVPN and IKEv2 with AES-256. RAM-only servers, DNS leak protection statements, post-quantum encryption and a bug bounty are not stated in VPNRadarLab's data.
GhostBear is the obfuscation mode for networks that block VPN traffic, and the only censorship tool on record. VLESS Reality, Trojan, Hysteria2 and Shadowsocks are not stated, which is why the bypass score sits under two: on a network with serious DPI, one obfuscation layer may not be enough.
Free, Unlimited or Teams: what TunnelBear costs
| Plan | Upfront | Per month | Renews at |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 | stays free |
| Unlimited 1 month | $10.99 | $10.99 | $10.99 |
| Unlimited 1 year | $69.99 | $5.83 | $69.99 |
| Unlimited 3 years | $120 | $3.33 | not published |
| Teams | not published | $5.75 per user | not published |
Auto-renewal is on by default, and the renewal ratio of 1.0× means no price jump when the yearly term rolls over. Checkout takes cards only, through Stripe or Link, so the account is tied to a payment identity. The refund rule is narrow: 30 days, full, first-year annual plans bought on the website. Monthly plans, Teams and app-store purchases are not eligible for it, and outside that window refunds are case by case. Teams runs $5.75 per user a month with a two-seat minimum; there is no family plan. The pricing page has the full cost breakdown.
Servers, apps and day-to-day use
Exits are physical machines in the country you pick, 8,000+ servers across 46+ countries. No Middle East or North Africa locations, no dedicated IP, no port forwarding, no virtual locations. P2P is allowed on friendly servers, while distributing copyrighted material breaks the terms; streaming unblocking is not something VPNRadarLab can confirm from the provider's pages.
Apps cover Windows, macOS, iOS and Android, plus a browser extension and the Blocker add-on for ads and malware. Linux and TV apps are not stated. There is no cap on devices at once, so one Unlimited account can cover a household. Support runs on email tickets and a help centre; there is no 24/7 chat on record, and the site is English-only. Store ratings swing widely between platforms, and the reviews page collects them.
Who TunnelBear suits and who should skip it
Take it for travel, café and hotel Wi-Fi, and a household wanting one simple account with unlimited devices. Skip it if anonymity is the goal, if you want to pay without a card, or if you need to get past a national firewall, where GhostBear alone may not hold.
TunnelBear questions
Is TunnelBear really free?
Yes, with 2 GB a month, no country choice and no split tunnelling.
Can TunnelBear be trusted?
TunnelBear reports a yearly outside security audit; the no-logs promise rests on the company's word alone.
Does TunnelBear work with Netflix?
VPNRadarLab has no record of a streaming claim from the provider, so this is not confirmed either way.
Can I torrent with TunnelBear?
P2P-friendly servers exist; sharing pirated files violates the terms.
TunnelBear verdict in brief
A friendly, routinely audited VPN whose yearly plan renews at the same $69.99, a real free tier and a security score well above the consumer median. It loses points where proof of privacy and censorship resistance matter, so choose it for convenience and travel, not for anonymity or heavy filtering.
