What is restricted online in Egypt right now
Two blocks shape the trip. Internet calls over WhatsApp, FaceTime and Viber have been restricted for years, and the regulator's late-2024 promise to lift the VoIP ban had not materialised by the end of Freedom House's 2025 coverage period. Mass blocking started in May 2017 with 21 news sites; by late 2020 rights groups counted at least 628 blocked sites, 394 of them VPN and proxy providers, with Cairo 24 and Zawia3 blocked more recently. Freedom House scores Egyptian internet freedom 28 of 100, status "Not Free" (report). Law 175 of 2018 obliges local providers to keep user-identifying records, including IP addresses, for 180 days; a tunnel reduces those records to connections with one VPN server.
Calling home over WhatsApp or FaceTime
With the tunnel connected, the network only sees encrypted traffic to your server, so a call is indistinguishable from a web page.
