What users say

Reviews never change our score. Ratings are smoothed: a source’s average across all VPNs counts as 50 extra reviews, so a few five-star reviews cannot outrank thousands.

  • Trustpilot

    3.83 of 5, smoothed

From 186 collected reviews (raw average 3.88; all VPNs 3.66). Last 90 days: 3.25 from 4.

The company replied to 0 of 50 negative reviews (1–2 stars).

  • App Store

    3.31 of 5, smoothed

From 436 collected reviews (raw average 3.28; all VPNs 3.54). Last 90 days: 2.96 from 28.

    3.79 of 5, smoothed

From 400 collected reviews (raw average 3.77; all VPNs 3.90). Last 90 days: 3.78 from 102.

Questions about Mullvad

Answers built from what Mullvad publishes. Open a question to read the details.

Mullvad earns its reputation on anonymity: an account number instead of an email, cash or Monero payment, a no-logs policy audited by Cure53. On VPNRadarLab it scores 4.78 of 10, ranking 13th of 377 services and 13th among consumer VPNs, well ahead of the 2.6 consumer median. The price of that purity is convenience: a flat €5 a month with no sales or promo codes, no free trial, and email-only support.

Why a privacy-first VPN sits 13th

Privacy and jurisdiction at 6.9 against a 2.7 median, and security at 5.7 against 2.1, carry the card. Below the top two sub-scores the picture inverts. Price and fair terms score 3.0, under the 3.5 median: the €5 entry rate loses points because most services in the ranking show a lower entry price, and with no free plan or trial another block of 2.5 points stays untouched, the 14-day refund being the only way to test-drive the service. Platforms and support land at 3.3 versus a 4.3 median, pulled down by the absence of live chat, phone or Telegram; the apps themselves cover every major platform in full. Sweden's 14 Eyes membership also costs jurisdiction points. Store ratings (Trustpilot 3.4, App Store 4.14, Google Play 4.1 with over 5 million installs) do not affect the score; the Mullvad reviews page breaks down what users actually complain about.

An account with no name on it

Sign-up requires no email, no phone and no identity check; login is by account number alone. The policy states no connection IP, no session times and no bandwidth are stored; the WireGuard public key and tunnel address are stored, as are payment IDs for 20 days and support emails for 70 days. The company behind the service is Mullvad VPN AB, based in Gothenburg, Sweden, and subject to GDPR. Paying with Monero or mailed cash keeps the payment itself out of any bank record, which is the point of the whole design.

Payment route What it reveals Note
Card, PayPal, wire your bank or PayPal identity refundable within 14 days
Local methods (Swish, iDEAL, Bancontact) your bank EU-friendly
Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Monero a wallet address 10% discount for crypto
Cash by post only the postmark refund terms exclude cash

One flat €5 monthly and €60 yearly, with time prepaid and auto-renewal off by default, means no surprise charges. The Mullvad pricing page has the full cost picture.

Servers, protocols and filtered networks

WireGuard is the core protocol, with quantum-resistant tunnels on all platforms and multi-hop included at no extra cost. The apps are open source on GitHub, so the client code can be read by anyone, and a bug bounty page exists. The network runs 566 servers in 91 cities across 50 countries, mostly on 10 Gbps ports. Against censorship, the apps offer obfuscation and bridge servers, plus an onion service; that lifts the bypass score to 2.4 against a 0.5 median. VPNRadarLab has no record of Reality, Shadowsocks or Hysteria2 support, though, so on a network with heavy DPI filtering the outcome is uncertain because none of those protocols is on record.
