VPNs in German: Providers Ranked for German-Speaking Users

How deep the German goes

The German stops at different layers for different services. On the site level, everything qualifies. On the app level, 7 of 87 providers even publish their app languages, and only 3 of those name German: ChibaTunnel (49th), Blokada (50th) and WireVPN (72nd), all below the middle of the table. On the support level, just 2 of 87 state German: G DATA VPN (76th, German support, its entire website is German-only) and SwissVPN (85th, help form in German or English). Surfshark and VyprVPN both have a help centre in German but do not state the language of their support. If the app menus matter to you, test the client yourself before the refund window closes.

The three highest-ranked providers side by side

CitadelVPN is registered in Panama with no Eyes alliance, offers a free plan, one-off payments without auto-renewal and a 14-day refund. Proton VPN brings the largest server fleet and a Swiss jurisdiction but auto-renews by default and caps paid devices at 10. Surfshark scores highest on apps and support, has its German help centre, and ships a no-logs audit by Deloitte, yet its Nine Eyes jurisdiction drags the privacy mark down. Its 7-day trial exists only with 12- and 24-month plans and needs a card.

Why apps and support weigh most

Apps, platforms and support carry 35% of the page score, ahead of privacy at 21.7%, security at 14.4%, price and terms and censorship bypass at 10.8% each, and the server network at 7.2%. That weighting explains the gap between Malwarebytes Privacy VPN and ZoogVPN: Malwarebytes has the better privacy mark (5.7 against 4.3) yet sits 39th, because its apps and support score is 3.2 against ZoogVPN's 9.

Paying in euros: currencies, prices and renewals

Only 20 of 87 providers quote euros themselves; most of the rest bill in US dollars, VPNUK in pounds and SwissVPN in francs. Euro billing means no conversion fee on every renewal. Across the list, the cheapest paid plan converts to €0.95 a month (PrivadoVPN) and the median sits at €3.33. More consequential than the price: 51 of 87 switch auto-renewal on by default, and 68 publish a money-back window at all. EU consumer rules on the 14-day right of withdrawal for online contracts run alongside whatever refund policy the provider promises.

German speakers who need more than a German website

A German site says nothing about where the company is incorporated or where the servers stand. Only 4 of 87 providers are registered in Germany (Shellfire VPN, Avira, OkayFreedom and G DATA VPN; Avira is owned by Gen Digital in the USA), and Germany itself is a Fourteen Eyes country. If your actual need is a German company, see the ranking of VPNs based in Germany; for a German IP address, see the ranking of VPNs with German servers.

Checking the German build before the refund window closes

1. Switch your phone or PC to Deutsch and open the app; untranslated menus show immediately.
2. Look at the billing and cancellation pages, which are often left in English.
3. Send one short question to support in German and note which language comes back.
4. Write down the renewal date and the refund deadline before the window expires.

FAQ

Short answer for German speakers

Pick by the table row you care about: CitadelVPN for one-off payments and a Panama jurisdiction, Proton VPN for network size, Surfshark for the German help centre and app coverage. Confirm the app language and support yourself during the refund period, and choose one of the 20 euro-billing providers if you want to skip currency conversion.
