Chinese-Language VPN Apps: Providers in Simplified and Traditional Chinese

Simplified, Traditional or just "Chinese": what the 84 websites offer

Sites label their language versions with tags; the W3C article on language tags decodes them. zh-Hans or zh-CN means Simplified, the script of mainland China and Singapore; zh-Hant, zh-TW or zh-HK means Traditional, used in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau.

Surfshark, NordVPN and PandaVPN Pro also run a separate zh-HK variant. For Traditional readers, the 40 unnamed sites are a gamble: check the characters before paying.

The top three on this page, side by side

Proton is Swiss, outside every surveillance alliance, with a published no-logs audit, though renewal roughly doubles after two years. Surfshark answers to the Netherlands, a Nine Eyes country. PureVPN's logging claims have a KPMG audit behind them.

Why apps and support decide the order here

This page weighs apps and support at 35%, privacy 21.7%, security 14.4%, price and censorship bypass 10.8% each, server network 7.2%. Mullvad shows the effect: it scores 4.78 overall, above ZoogVPN's 4.36, yet sits 18th here while ZoogVPN takes 6th, because their apps-and-support marks are 3.3 versus 9. NordVPN has a higher overall score than Surfshark yet lands 4th.

Chinese help desks and apps: who actually says

Just 24 of the 84 state which languages support replies in, and Chinese appears among those languages for 14 of them; Surfshark and VyprVPN are two of these 14, handling it through a help centre (both scripts and Simplified respectively). App languages are published for only 19 services, 14 with Chinese; for the rest the app language is simply not published, so check it on your device after installing. Use the money-back window to switch the app to Chinese and send support a question before the refund runs out.

Nine websites that exist only in Chinese

Nine services have no English site at all: Yuutto, Tigerleap, Sixfast, Leigod, UU Accelerator, UU Game Booster, Xunyou, biubiu Game Booster and PlanBooster VPN. Most are game accelerators, and all rank 57th or worse, with seven too sparse on data for the main ranking. Seven providers are registered in China (six accelerators plus Speedy Quark VPN), which puts them under Chinese jurisdiction.

A Chinese menu will not get you past the Great Firewall

Localisation and access are separate problems. 36 of the 84 list obfuscation (stealth mode); for most of the rest it is not stated. The top three score 2.4, 1.9 and 1.9 on the censorship-bypass scale of ten. Connecting from the mainland is a different buying decision; start with the VPN ranking for China. If you're abroad and need a Chinese IP for local apps, see the list of VPNs with servers in China.

FAQ

Short answer: picking a VPN in Chinese

If you read Traditional, stay with the 28 sites that declare it. Proton VPN (6.40) is the top pick on this page and has the strongest privacy score of the three, Surfshark documents Chinese help in both scripts with round-the-clock chat, and PureVPN is the cheapest option at €1.85 monthly. Verify the app's language and a support reply before the refund window closes.
