What users say
Reviews never change our score. Ratings are smoothed: a source’s average across all VPNs counts as 50 extra reviews, so a few five-star reviews cannot outrank thousands.

Questions about Proton VPN
Answers built from what Proton VPN publishes. Open a question to read the details.
Proton VPN scores 6.12 of 10 on VPNRadarLab, ranking 2nd among 377 services overall and 2nd among consumer VPNs. An audited no-logs policy, open-source clients and its own hardware network drive that position; the score suffers from weak censorship bypass and the price jump at renewal.
Where Proton VPN lands in the ranking
Across 233 consumer services the median is 2.6, so Proton more than doubles the typical result. Privacy and jurisdiction carry 30% of the total, security 20%, price and bypass 15% each, network and platforms 10% each. VPNRadarLab scores only what the provider publishes (policies, audits, app lists, prices) and runs no speed or streaming tests. Facts checked 15 October 2026, data completeness 100%.
Where Proton VPN loses points
Bypass is where Proton collects 2.5 of the 10.5 possible points, a sub-score of 2.4 against a segment median of 0.5. Its single obfuscation option is the Stealth protocol, which hides WireGuard inside TLS so the traffic resembles a normal HTTPS session. Alternative routing helps the app reach Proton when its own domains are blocked. Stealth is built for filtered networks such as a hotel or campus firewall, but against a national system that fingerprints TLS the toolkit is thin: VLESS with Reality, Shadowsocks and Trojan, the tools people rely on in that scenario, are absent. Proton does not publish manual config files or VoIP support in the UAE either.
Price and fair terms collect 6.4 of 12. The two-year Plus subscription opens at €3.00 monthly, under the market median of €3.13, but renewal costs 2.0× the first term and auto-renewal is on by default: cancel in the dashboard or the second bill doubles. The refund runs 30 days from the first purchase only, once per user, direct purchases only, and cash or bank transfer is not refundable. There is no free trial; the free plan and the money-back window stand in for one.
Privacy gains 9 of 15. Proton AG sits in Switzerland, outside the 5, 9 and 14 Eyes, with a published independent no-logs audit, transparency report and warrant canary. The deductions: email required at sign-up, no account-number login, connection IPs held briefly against abuse (no permanent logs), Proton does not publish how it handles connection timestamps, and the no-logs claim has not been proven in court. The Proton VPN safety page covers logs and audits in detail. Security reaches 11 of 14; the deductions come from RAM-only servers, post-quantum encryption and two-factor sign-in being unpublished, which matters if you want a second factor on the account itself.
Proton VPN for torrenting, streaming and travel
| Task | What Proton VPN offers | The limit |
|---|---|---|
| Torrenting | P2P servers, port forwarding (paid) | Without port forwarding, peers cannot reach your client |
| Streaming | Netflix US, UK, France, Disney+, Prime Video claimed | Not on Free |
| Travel | Kill switch, DNS leak protection, NetShield (paid) | On hotel Wi-Fi the kill switch stops the leak when the tunnel drops |
| Censored networks | Stealth, alternative routing | No VLESS or Shadowsocks |
The network is large: 140+ countries, 20,000+ servers, some of them on 10 Gbps ports, on Proton's own bare-metal hardware. Dedicated IP and Middle East locations are not published.
Free, Plus or Unlimited
| Plan | Price a month | Devices | You get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | €0 | 1 | Unlimited data, no ads, medium speed, servers in 10 random countries |
| Plus | from €3.00 | 10 | Full country list, streaming, P2P, NetShield, Secure Core, Pass Free, 5 GB Drive |
| Unlimited | about €6.87 | 10 | Plus features plus Pass Premium, 500 GB Drive, Mail Premium |
The free tier is straightforward: no cap, no advertising, one device at medium speed across ten countries picked at random. Streaming, P2P, NetShield, Secure Core and the full country list all sit behind paid plans. Apps cover Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, Android TV, Fire TV, Apple TV, Chromebook and browser extensions; split tunnelling exists on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, Android TV and the browser extension. Paid plans include priority live chat plus a support form, Telegram, Discord, Reddit and a status page. 24/7 chat and router apps are not published, so covering a whole home network through one router is not documented.
Who should pick Proton VPN and who should look elsewhere
Torrenters, users who want a Swiss jurisdiction beyond the surveillance alliances, and existing Proton Mail customers with one bill in mind all fit here; the client code is public on Proton's GitHub. If you need a published router app, around-the-clock chat or a protocol stack built for heavy filtering, Proton lists none of the three, and our alternatives page ranks comparable services.
Proton VPN review FAQ
Is Proton VPN worth paying for?
Yes, provided you accept the renewal cost. Plan around the second bill, not the introductory one.
Is the free version good enough?
For light browsing on a single device, yes. Streaming and P2P need Plus.
Does Proton VPN work on censored networks?
Stealth is the tool meant for filtered office or school networks; VPNRadarLab runs no connection tests, so the 2.4 reflects the published feature set.
Can I pay without a card?
Yes: Bitcoin, cash and bank transfer via Proton credits, plus Visa, Mastercard, Amex and PayPal. Cash and bank transfer cannot be refunded.
Proton VPN verdict in short
Rank 2 of 377 at 6.12: Swiss, audited, open-source, with a large own-hardware network. Against that stand one obfuscation option, a renewal at double the intro price with auto-renewal pre-enabled and email-based registration. It suits privacy and torrenting; behind heavy DPI, compare the alternatives first.
