Best VPN Chrome Extensions: Top Picks, Prices and What They Protect

The top three on the same fields

Three details matter before paying. Proton charges double after the first term. Surfshark bills the card once the trial week ends unless you cancel. X-VPN refunds card and PayPal payments but excludes crypto.

Why the order here differs from the overall ranking

Ecosystem carries 35% of the score on this page: cross-platform apps, extensions, split tunnelling, ad blocker, support. Privacy follows at 21.7%, security at 14.4%; value and censorship bypass get 10.8% apiece, network the remaining 7.2%. On the ecosystem column X-VPN and Surfshark reach 9.0 against Proton's 7.1, which drops Proton to second here despite its leading overall number.

Extension or full app: what your money buys

The add-on reroutes traffic from Chrome tabs and leaves everything else untouched; torrent clients and mail programs keep the home IP. For 24 providers our data classify the extension as a proxy: the visible address changes, but encryption quality depends on the provider. For 74 services out of 92, one plan unlocks the extension plus clients for Windows, macOS and the iOS and Android apps. Eight providers (AtmosVPN, YourVPN, 1VPN, Wachee VPN, GLOBEX VPN, 1ClickVPN, NinjaVPN, iNinja VPN) name no Windows or macOS client: six of them state outright that they have none, while YourVPN and NinjaVPN simply do not say, so on a laptop the extension is the only client these eight list.

What to check in the extension itself

Split tunnelling inside the extension lets you exclude specific sites, so a bank that blocks foreign IPs works without switching the VPN off; Proton VPN and Surfshark both support this. The 28 Chrome-only services force a second tool if Firefox or Edge is also part of your routine. For providers whose logging claims survived an outside audit, see the audited no-logs ranking.

Prices, refunds and renewal traps

iProVPN opens the list at €0.57 a month, followed by FastestVPN at €0.71 and PrivadoVPN at €0.95; the median sits at €2.86. Thirty days is the standard refund window (34 services), though a few stop at seven. Proton refunds only direct purchases, excluding cash and bank transfers.

Setting the extension up in Chrome

Use the Web Store link published on the vendor's site, since copycat listings exist. After signing in, open the extension's Details page: Allow in incognito is off by default, so private windows bypass the tunnel until you flip it. Chrome won't accept new extensions while in Incognito or guest mode at all. Site access can be limited per website, which pairs well with per-site VPN rules; Google's extension guide covers these switches.

Which extensions carry red flags

Twelve services here raise concerns. Nine log connection IP addresses; NinjaVPN counts among them, as do Hola VPN and Bright VPN. The remaining three, Hotspot Shield, Urban VPN and LibertyShield VPN, went through a security incident that became public. Eight of the twelve run a free plan; the free extensions page explains how they make that money back.

FAQ

Short answer

Across the 92 Chrome extensions ranked here, the leaders are X-VPN at 6.89, Proton VPN at 6.40 and Surfshark at 6.34. Fourteen publish an independent no-logs audit, twelve carry a red flag, and paid plans run from €0.57 with a €2.86 median. For most of the 92, the same plan also covers desktop and mobile apps, which turns a browser-only add-on into full protection.
