ASUS Router VPN: Compatible Services, VPN Fusion and Merlin Setup

Any provider handing out a standard OpenVPN file, a WireGuard configuration, or L2TP/PPTP credentials will run on an ASUS router: the stock Asuswrt firmware has a built-in client, so an ASUS-specific guide merely speeds up setup. Eight services on this page state ASUS support, VPNUK scores highest at 4.68, and the cheapest paid plan starts at €2.14 a month. Read more

Top 3 ASUS router VPNs by page score

Service Page / overall Registered in ASUS support Lowest plan Monthly Money-back
VPNUK 4.68 / 3.73 Belize ASUS, GL.iNet, DD-WRT €2.88 (2 yr) €4.02 30 days
Le VPN 4.52 / 3.15 Hong Kong DD-WRT, ASUS, GL.iNet, OpenWrt €4.26 (1 yr) €8.56 30 days
Bolehvpn 4.09 / 3.10 Malaysia Asus Merlin, DD-WRT, Tomato €4.98 (2 yr) €8.59 14 days

VPNUK publishes a 30-day trial needing no card; Le VPN lists none. Le VPN's privacy is the weak spot: the provider keeps the connection IP address, which sinks its privacy sub-score to 0.7.

What the stock ASUS firmware can run

The client sits in the web GUI under VPN. Older builds there offer PPTP, L2TP and OpenVPN, where OpenVPN means uploading the provider's .ovpn file plus a login. From firmware 388 the same section is named VPN Fusion, and WireGuard appears there, but only on builds past 3.0.0.4.388.23000 and on supported models.

VPN Fusion's real gain is per-device assignment: two tunnels can run at once, the TV on one, a laptop on the other, the console left on the normal WAN. Routers lacking Fusion push every LAN device into the tunnel once it connects.

Which protocol each service gives an ASUS router

Service WireGuard OpenVPN L2TP / PPTP Stated for ASUS
VPNUK yes yes both router support
Le VPN yes manual both guides, no files mentioned
Bolehvpn not published yes L2TP Asus Merlin
OVPN yes yes not published AsusWrt guide, ready files
Witopia yes yes both CloakBox on ASUS hardware
SmartDNS Proxy no yes both manual Asus setup
Hidden24 no no both RT-N66U guide
UU Accelerator not published not published not published ASUS as hardware partner

Two rows need a warning. Hidden24 offers just L2TP and PPTP, and PPTP's encryption broke down years ago, so reserve it for legacy gear. UU Accelerator is a NetEase game accelerator, not a general VPN; too little about it is published, so it stays outside the ranking of seven.

Setting up a provider in VPN Fusion

  1. Update the firmware and confirm the model lists WireGuard among profile types.
  2. Grab the profile from the provider's site.
  3. In VPN Fusion pick Add profile, choose the type, upload the file or type credentials.
  4. Mark the devices meant to use the tunnel, then apply.
  5. Check the public IP and test DNS for leaks from a LAN device.

The ASUS walkthrough shows every screen.

The IP routing conflict and other snags

A tunnel showing a warning and passing no traffic usually points to the router's LAN subnet matching the VPN server's. Move the router's LAN IP into another range, for instance 192.168.60.x, and reconnect. If the VPN server drops and comes back, the client does not reconnect by itself; toggle the profile manually. On older models the CPU caps OpenVPN throughput, so when a WireGuard file exists, take it, it needs far less processing power.

Asuswrt-Merlin and VPN Director

Merlin is community firmware that keeps most stock features yet replaces VPN Fusion with VPN Director, which routes OpenVPN clients by source or destination address. DNS Director enforces a chosen DNS server globally or per client. The official feature list covers the details. Bolehvpn is the one here that names Merlin support directly.

How the page score treats these services

The page score gives apps and platforms a 35% weight and privacy 22%. None of the eight publishes an independent no-logs audit: five have none, three do not disclose, which keeps privacy sub-scores low. Paid plans go from €2.14 (Witopia) with a median of €3.63. Two red flags stand out: Le VPN logging connection IPs and UU Accelerator's Chinese jurisdiction.

ASUS router VPN FAQ

Does my ASUS router have a built-in VPN?

Yes. Client and server both ship in the stock firmware; a provider still supplies the tunnel.

Can only some devices use the VPN?

On VPN Fusion models, or under VPN Director on Merlin, yes: assign devices one by one and leave the rest on WAN.

Does every ASUS router support WireGuard?

No. It needs firmware past 3.0.0.4.388.23000 plus a model on the ASUS supported list.

Short answer for ASUS owners

Sort out the subnet conflict if the tunnel refuses to pass traffic, then verify your IP once connected. VPNUK tops the page at 4.68 and OVPN ships ready files; other brands are covered in the wider router VPN ranking.
