How to cancel a VPN subscription: where to cancel and what happens next

Cancel with whoever took your payment. Bought on the provider's website, renewal gets switched off in your account dashboard there; bought inside an app store, Apple or Google controls the charge and the provider has no say. Cancel before the deadline the provider sets, and the time already paid for keeps running to its last day.

Start with who billed you

Check the merchant name on your bank statement or receipt. It points to the right door.

The rule of thumb: cancel with the party that billed you. With PayPal there are two routes, the provider's account page or the automatic payments section inside PayPal itself.

Cancelling when you paid in the app

On iPhone or iPad: Settings, your name, Subscriptions, pick the VPN, then Cancel. There is no Cancel button, or a red expiration message shows? It was already cancelled. Apple also requires a trial to be stopped at least 24 hours before it ends, otherwise it converts into a paid plan. Apple's official guide covers the same flow on Mac and the web.

On Android: Play Store, profile icon, Payments and subscriptions, Subscriptions, select the VPN, cancel. Google may place a payment hold up to 48 hours before the renewal date, so cancel before that point if you want no charge at all. Deleting the app from the phone stops nothing.

Turning off renewal and getting money back are two different things

Cancelling only blocks the next charge. Money already paid comes back through a refund claim inside the provider's window. Of the 377 services ranked, 254 offer a money-back guarantee, usually 30 days, though many give only 7 or 14. The small print matters: 72 providers limit refunds to the first purchase or exclude renewals, and 77 send store purchases through Apple's or Google's own refund process. What you keep after cancelling

The plan stays active until the end of the paid period; ExitLag, Pingzapper and SecureVPN.com state this explicitly. After that date paid features stop. The account itself survives: cancelling does not delete it, and deleting it is a separate request that returns nothing for the current term.

Where provider rules differ

FastestVPN, Canada VPN, CopVPN and VMP VPN want cancellation at least 24 hours before the term ends; X-VPN asks for 3 days; Safing SPN for 72 hours; McAfee VPN more than a month ahead; Swisscows VPN wants 4 weeks' notice by email. Last-day cancelling can simply be too late. A few services (Mysterium Network among them) accept cancellation only by email or support ticket. At the other end, 17 services never auto-renew: prepaid time and one-off orders just expire. And 56 of the 377 providers collect a card for a free trial, which turns into a paid plan unless you cancel in time.
