For a subscription bought on the PIA website, cancellation means turning off auto-renewal in the Client Control Panel: there is no separate cancel button, the plan simply runs out when the paid term ends. Purchases made through an app store are stopped only in that store's settings, because Apple or Google holds the billing. Either way, the VPN keeps working until the last paid day, after which the account closes.

Who bills you decides where PIA gets cancelled

The receipt names the party charging you, and that party alone can stop the next charge.

Switching off auto-renewal in the PIA Client Control Panel

Log in with your PIA username and password from any browser, then follow the flow described in PIA's own cancellation help article at helpdesk.privateinternetaccess.com:

  1. Open the Client Control Panel and sign in.
  2. In the Subscription Overview, find the Next Billing line.
  3. Choose Turn off auto-renewal.
  4. Confirm by choosing Turn off auto-renewal again when prompted.
  5. Pick a cancellation reason and submit it if asked.

Independent guides warn about retention screens in between, including one offering a chat with support. The cancellation only counts once the panel reports that auto-renewal was successfully turned off. Close the tab before that message and the billing stays as it was.

Stopping a PIA subscription bought through Apple or Google

App-store subscriptions are billed and managed by Apple and Google, and the PIA panel cannot touch them. On an iPhone or iPad, open the App Store, tap the profile picture, go to Subscriptions, select Private Internet Access and press Cancel Subscription; the same list sits in Settings under your name. No Cancel button, or a red expiration message, means the job is already done (Apple documents this on its support page). On Android, open Google Play, tap the profile icon, go to Payments & subscriptions, Subscriptions, select the VPN and confirm, using the Google account that actually paid.

Amazon Payments versus the Amazon Appstore

These two get confused constantly. Choosing Amazon Payments at PIA checkout on the website behaves exactly like a card subscription: it is switched off in the Client Control Panel alongside card and PayPal plans. A subscription bought through the Amazon Appstore is a different animal: cancel it in Your Memberships and Subscriptions inside your Amazon account, and Amazon converts the renewal date into the end date of the service.

Crypto and gift card plans that expire on their own

BitPay and other crypto payments, plus gift card orders, never renew automatically. There is nothing to switch off: the plan runs to the end of the prepaid time and stops by itself.

The days between cancelling and the end of the term

After renewal is switched off, no next charge appears, and the account stays active for everything already paid for. If you change your mind while the term is still running, card, PayPal and Amazon subscriptions can be switched back on from the Subscription Overview; other payment methods require buying a new plan. Once the term ends, a cancelled account cannot be reactivated, so returning later means signing up fresh. Turning off renewal deletes nothing; account deletion goes through a support ticket to PIA. A refund is its own matter too: PIA offers a 30-day money-back guarantee counted from the initial purchase or a renewal, and the details are on the VPNRadarLab refund page.

What auto-renewal would have charged

PIA renews at the same price as the first payment: the 3 years + 3 months plan ($73.71 for 39 months, about $1.89 a month) renews at $73.71 for the next 36 months, the yearly plan at $47.88, the monthly one at $11.95. The bonus months on the long plan are not repeated at renewal, which is why VPNRadarLab measures the renewal rise as x1.08, below the threshold where it penalises the score. In the price and terms block (5.6 of 10), self-service cancellation earns its point, while auto-renewal switched on by default and the unpublished renewal reminder earn nothing; the overall PIA score lands at 5.13 of 10, placing it 9th in the main ranking.

Questions about cancelling PIA

Does deleting the PIA app stop the billing?

No. Billing lives in your account or store profile, not on the device.

Is there a free trial to cancel?

There is no trial; a 30-day money-back guarantee replaces it.

Can I undo the cancellation?

Yes, while paid time remains, for card, PayPal and Amazon website plans.

Does cancelling delete my PIA account?

No. Deletion is a separate request to support.

Cancelling PIA in short

Check who charged you, then turn off auto-renewal in the Client Control Panel for website purchases or in the store for app purchases. The service lasts until the final paid day, confirmation messages are the only real proof, and after the term runs out the account is gone for good.
