What you pay to keep Private Internet Access running: the first term, then renewals at the published renewal price. Where no renewal price is published, plans shorter than a year are counted as repeat payments at the current price; longer plans show a dash after their term. Autorenews at same price: $73.71 every 3 years; $47.88 yearly; $11.95 monthly

PIA sells one VPN plan at three billing lengths: $11.95 monthly, $47.88 a year and $73.71 for 39 months (3 years plus 3 bonus months). The monthly equivalent runs from $1.89 to $11.95, renewal keeps the same dollar amounts (the long term just drops its bonus months), and against the VPNRadarLab market median of €3.13 the long deal costs about half as much.

Three billing terms on a single plan

Term Paid upfront Per month Next charge Per month after renewal
3 years + 3 months $73.71 $1.89 $73.71 for 36 months about $2.05
1 year $47.88 $3.99 $47.88 for 12 months $3.99
1 month $11.95 $11.95 $11.95 $11.95

Every term carries the same feature set, so picking one is a cash-flow decision. The long order fits anyone committing for years, the annual one covers people who dislike paying that far ahead, and monthly works for short stints. PIA's site also mentions a 2-year option, though without a published price, so treat it as a dead end until one shows up.

Why the second PIA bill barely changes

On the long term, the three bonus months vanish after the first cycle, so the same $73.71 then buys a plain 36 months, lifting the monthly figure to about $2.05, a 1.08-fold step (the page rounds it to 1.1). Yearly and monthly terms renew at exactly the price you started with.

Auto-renewal is on by default, and you can switch it off in the subscriptions section of your account or in the app store you subscribed through. The 84% discount badge compares the long plan with paying $11.95 month by month for the whole 39 months, not with the renewal rate, so read it as a first-term figure. A Halloween offer banner was running when these prices were collected, and the banner showed no separate sale price.

Thirty-six months of PIA on each term

Over three full years the gap between terms becomes the real story. The long plan costs $73.71 and still leaves three months of service unused. Renewing the annual plan twice lands at $143.64, nearly double. Paying monthly for 36 months totals $430.20, close to six times the long order. If you want to model other device counts or periods, the VPN cost calculator puts numbers on it.

Dedicated IP and antivirus, priced only at checkout

Two add-ons appear when you pay, and neither carries a published price. A dedicated IP gives you a static address nobody else uses, which matters when banking portals or work systems flag shared VPN exits. The antivirus add-on covers Windows machines only, so Mac and mobile users get nothing from it. These two are the only paid extras; everything else ships inside the base plan: unlimited simultaneous devices, no data limit, no speed cap, multi-hop routing, MACE ad and malware blocking, Smart DNS, split tunnelling and a kill switch. A password manager, eSIM, identity protection and cloud storage are not sold at all.

Where PIA's per-month rate lands in the VPNRadarLab market

Rate € per month Next to the €3.13 median
Long term, first period €1.63 About half
Long term, renewed about €1.77 Still below
1 year €3.43 Slightly above
1 month €10.28 About 3.3 times

Euro figures are VPNRadarLab conversions from the dollar list prices. The "price and terms" sub-score lands at 5.57 out of 10. Points come from the low entry rate, the 30-day refund window that also covers monthly plans, unlimited devices, crypto payment and self-service cancelling; the small renewal step stays far below the 1.3-fold mark where the renewal penalty starts, so it costs nothing. What does cost points: no free plan, no free trial, no cash payment, auto-renewal switched on by default, no reminder before the charge and no pro-rata refund on unused months. PIA's overall score is 5.13, placing it 9th in the main ranking.

Paying for PIA with a card, PayPal, gift cards or BitPay

Cards, PayPal and Amazon Payments work, as do the App Store, Google Play and the Amazon store for in-app purchases. Gift cards suit people who would rather keep their bank details out of it, and crypto goes through BitPay without any discount for using it. Cash is not accepted. An email address is required for every sign-up, while a phone number and an identity check are not, so paying in coins keeps your card hidden but leaves your inbox exposed. Instead of a trial there is a 30-day money-back guarantee; the refund page spells out the conditions.

PIA billing questions

Is there a free PIA plan or trial?

No. The closest thing is the 30-day money-back guarantee, which means paying first and asking for money back if it does not fit.

Does the 1-year plan cost more in year two?

No. It renews at the same $47.88.

Can I buy a 2-year PIA plan?

The site mentions one, but publishes no price, so the 39-month and annual terms are the practical choices.

The PIA term worth paying for

The 3-years-plus-3-months term is the pick, because even after renewal it stays under the €3.13 market median at about €1.77 a month. The yearly plan is a workable middle ground. Monthly billing makes sense only for a few weeks of use, and the checkout add-ons are worth taking solely if you need a fixed IP or Windows antivirus. Full terms are on PIA's own checkout page.
