Private Internet Access customer reviews: connection drops, billing disputes and an easy app
4,435 reviews of Private Internet Access collected from Trustpilot, App Store and Google Play. Most come from Google Play: 3.76 of 5 after smoothing. Reviews never change our score.
Ratings by source
Smoothed: a source’s average across all VPNs counts as 50 extra reviews, so a few five-star reviews cannot outrank thousands.

Across the written reviews VPNRadarLab collected, PIA's customers are mostly satisfied: Trustpilot and the App Store sit well above the all-VPN averages while Google Play runs slightly under it. The dominant one- and two-star cause is a connection that fails, drops or crawls; billing and cancelling come second. Five-star posts are earned by price, simple apps and stability, and none of this feedback moves the VPNRadarLab score of 5.13.
How PIA's written reviews compare across Trustpilot, the App Store and Google Play
| Platform | Written reviews | Smoothed average | All-VPN average | Last 90 days | Negative answered by PIA |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Trustpilot | 200 | 4.11 | 3.66 | 4.09 | 35 of 36 |
| App Store | 2,069 | 4.31 | 3.54 | 4.66 | — |
| Google Play | 2,166 | 3.76 | 3.90 | 3.45 | 279 of 582 |
Star-only taps without text count towards the platform badges, which is why those figures run above the written averages, most sharply on Google Play. Volume spiked in August and September 2026 (374 and 467 reviews) without pushing the monthly average outside its 4.12–4.21 range, so the late-summer wave came largely from content users. The weakest recent stretch was November 2025, when 35 reviews averaged 3.17.
Why unhappy PIA customers leave one star
Tally the 889 negative reviews by keyword (approximate counts; one post can hit several themes) and two buckets tower over the rest: connection failures at about 46% of negative reviews, billing at about 22%, then login trouble, support and post-update breakage near 10% each.
| Complaint theme | Trustpilot | App Store | Google Play |
|---|---|---|---|
| Connection fails, drops, slow | ~36% | ~58% | ~42% |
| Billing, renewals, cancelling | ~50% | ~24% | ~19% |
| Login and account | ~19% | ~9% | ~10% |
| Support | ~33% | ~11% | ~8% |
Billing, renewals and refunds
Trustpilot anger is mostly about money, and the terms explain why. Auto-renewal ships switched on, so a plan bought years ago resurfaces as a charge nobody planned for. The renewal keeps the same price per term, which is why the posts sound like forgotten subscriptions, not sudden price hikes. The 30-day money-back guarantee covers renewals too and includes verification; PIA refuses refunds for accounts created within three months of an earlier refund. No free trial is listed, so the refund window is the only way to test before committing.
Connections abroad, captchas and streaming
A smaller slice of complaints comes from travellers and from places where VPN traffic gets filtered. PIA publishes no obfuscation or censorship-bypass protocol, and that absence is exactly why its bypass sub-score is a flat zero. Captcha walls and locked streaming catalogues appear too. PIA makes no streaming unblocking claims, so anyone counting on a particular service should test it inside the 30-day money-back window. VPNRadarLab has separate pages on PIA's connection fixes and refund rules if either theme is your worry.
Harsher in English and Arabic, kinder in Dutch and French
Split Google Play by language and the mood swings hard: Dutch reviews average 4.19 with 15% negative, French 4.00 with 20%, while English and Arabic drop to 3.48 and 3.44 with roughly a third negative. Among the angry English posts, about 57% are about connections. Many Arabic one-star posts give no reason at all: 38 of the 69 negative reviews shorter than 15 characters are in Arabic. On the App Store, the US (4.66) and UK (4.44) country stores lead; the UAE sits lowest at 2.89, from only 35 reviews, too thin a sample to lean on.
What satisfied PIA users keep mentioning
Trustpilot praise leads with price and value (about 36% of positive posts), then reliability, ease of use and speed. The simple apps that work without tinkering matter elsewhere too, as does the unlimited simultaneous devices allowance across Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android, plus routers and browser extensions.
Does PIA answer bad reviews?
On Trustpilot, 35 of the 36 negative reviews got a company reply; on Google Play it answered 279 of 582, roughly half. The App Store sample carries no reply data.
Reviews and the VPNRadarLab score
The score (9th of 377) rests on published facts, and customer feedback never shifts it. Its strongest sub-score is platforms, its weakest bypass, mirroring what the travel and streaming complaints point towards. The full breakdown lives in the PIA review on VPNRadarLab.
Questions about PIA reviews
Is PIA trustworthy going by its customers?
Mostly. The negative posts centre on dropped sessions, login trouble and unplanned auto-renewal charges, and part of the billing posts call it a scam. Still, PIA's Trustpilot average is above the all-VPN average.
Why is the Google Play badge higher than the written reviews?
The badge includes star-only taps without text, while the written sample counts only reviews with text.
Can I try PIA before paying?
Not for free. Sign-up needs an email, and the 30-day money-back guarantee is the fallback if the service disappoints.
PIA customer feedback in brief
Expect a VPN most buyers rate well, an Android audience that grumbles most, and complaints dominated by failed connections and auto-renewal charges. One practical step before paying: buy the plan, then switch off auto-renewal in your subscriptions the same day and diary the refund deadline, so the only thing you can complain about later is the connection itself.
