Private Internet Access not working or not connecting: PIA fixes in order

2 things to check, built from what Private Internet Access publishes about its apps, protocols and support. We do not test connections ourselves.

When PIA spins on "connecting", drops every few minutes or shows connected while nothing loads, the culprit is usually the network, a crowded server or a filtered protocol. Try another network first, then a fresh server; if neither helps, work through the settings below and, as the last stop, send a debug log to the 24/7 live chat.

First, make sure PIA is the problem

Load a website with the VPN disconnected. If it fails, the fault is upstream and no app setting will help. If the web is fine, tether the laptop to the phone's hotspot and connect again: success on mobile data points at the original Wi-Fi, and public networks are the usual offender. Confirm the subscription is active, then install the newest app version, since an outdated build can carry bugs a newer one has fixed.

PIA stuck on connecting: server, then protocol and port

A busy server responds slowly or drops, so pick a nearby location with lower latency or use "Automatic" ("Choose Automatically" on desktop and the extension, a top entry on mobile). Manual configurations need a fresh .ovpn file for the new location. PIA offers WireGuard and OpenVPN with AES-128 or AES-256 encryption; change one setting at a time.

Protocol When to pick it Trade-off
WireGuard Default choice on open networks Fastest, but UDP-only
OpenVPN UDP WireGuard stalls but UDP passes Slightly slower
OpenVPN TCP Strict office, campus or hotel filters Slowest, steadiest

Blocked UDP stalls WireGuard and OpenVPN UDP alike; TCP 443 gets through filters that let ordinary web traffic out, because it rides the HTTPS port. Flip through the port combinations, including UDP 8080, 853, 123, 53 and TCP 443, 853, 8443, 80, and check the connection after each: PIA's connection troubleshooting guide covers them in full.

Drops on mobile data and routers: Small Packets

Some carriers and cheap routers choke on large packets, so the tunnel reconnects endlessly. Small Packets shrinks the MTU to work around them: disconnect, flip the switch in the protocol settings, reconnect.

Connected but pages will not load

No internet right after the VPN disconnects is often the kill switch doing its job: the standard VPN Kill Switch (on by default) cuts the internet when the tunnel drops, and reconnecting is the fix, since disabling it exposes your real IP. The Advanced Kill Switch blocks all traffic unless connected, even before the app starts; both live under Settings > Privacy. When the tunnel is up but sites stay blank, MACE, the ad and malware blocker, can stop a site it deems a tracker, and a broad split-tunnelling rule can push an app outside the tunnel, so toggle each off once. On Windows, run ipconfig /flushdns and netsh winsock reset as administrator, then restart. On macOS, flush the DNS cache in Terminal and delete old VPN profiles under System Settings > VPN.

Antivirus, firewall and the browser extension

An antivirus or firewall without an exclusion can mistake the encrypted tunnel for a threat, so add PIA to the allowed apps or exclusions instead of weakening protection. Quit any other VPN app, proxy extension or network optimisation tool, since several of them clash over the same tunnel. The Chrome and Firefox extensions cannot change ports or protocols, so on a restrictive network use the desktop app and test the extension in another browser first.

PIA on iPhone and Android

Battery saving modes close the VPN in the background, and the tunnel drops with it. On Android, make sure battery usage for PIA is not "Restricted"; on iPhone, switch Low Power Mode off. If drops continue and the app will not connect, PIA's help centre suggests reinstalling, since an interrupted update or a damaged app file can stop it from connecting.

Restricted networks, censorship and streaming

Multi-Hop routes the connection through an extra proxy before the VPN server, giving a hostile network a different path at the cost of latency. That is the limit: PIA scores 0 of 10 on the VPNRadarLab bypass sub-index, with no VLESS Reality, Trojan, Hysteria2, AmneziaWG, obfs4, TUIC or NaiveProxy in the data, so under national DPI blocking check the obfuscated VPN list instead. Its terms restrict use in US-embargoed countries and EAR groups D:1 and E:2, which include China, Russia and Vietnam. On streaming, PIA makes no Netflix or BBC iPlayer claims; Smart DNS is included, a dedicated IP is a paid add-on, and a service may still refuse the address.

Sending the problem to PIA support

Enable debug logging (desktop: Settings > Help > Enable debug logging; mobile: Settings > Help), repeat the failed connection so the log captures it, and send the log over the 24/7 live chat or as an email ticket through the helpdesk.

PIA connection FAQ

Is PIA down right now?

The VPNRadarLab data lists no public status page for PIA. Try several locations on two networks; if everything fails, ask the live chat.

Why does PIA keep disconnecting?

Crowded servers, weak Wi-Fi or oversized packets. Change location first, then enable Small Packets.

Does PIA work in China or Russia?

Its terms restrict use in both countries, and it lacks a stealth protocol.

The order of fixes in brief

Test another network and a hotspot, update the app, switch to a nearby or automatic server, then work through protocol, transport and port, enable Small Packets where needed, review the kill switch and MACE, whitelist PIA in your security software, and if it still fails, send a debug log to support. PIA ranks 9th of 377 in the VPNRadarLab main ranking with 5.13 of 10. Troubleshooting pages for other providers sit in the VPN not working hub.
