IPVanish not working? Connection fixes for computers, phones and Fire TV
4 things to check, built from what IPVanish publishes about its apps, protocols and support. We do not test connections ourselves.
What to check
Check the provider’s status page for an outage (status.ipvanish.com).
Switch protocol in the app: IPVanish lists WireGuard, OpenVPN, IKEv2.
If the network blocks VPNs, turn on obfuscation (Obfuscation).
Contact support: live chat, email.

When IPVanish stalls, the fault usually sits in a lapsed subscription, a bad server, a network filtering your protocol, or security software on the device. Work through them in that sequence.
Rule out an outage, your account and your own connection
Check the IPVanish status page before touching any settings. A region flagged there means no setting on your side will help, so pick another city and revisit later. Then disconnect the VPN and try to reach a website: if pages still fail without the tunnel, your router or ISP is the problem, and that comes before anything VPN-related.
An app that is logged in yet never finishes connecting often means the plan has run out. The renewal date appears in the Account section of the app. If the subscription is current, close the program fully, wait a moment, relaunch; reinstalling the newest build repairs damaged profiles that a restart cannot.
Change protocol and server inside the IPVanish app
Hotel, campus and mobile networks tend to pass one protocol and quietly drop another. Cycle through the options before blaming the service:
| Protocol | Ports it needs | When to try it |
|---|---|---|
| WireGuard | outbound TCP 443 and UDP 51820 | first choice, app only |
| OpenVPN UDP | 443 or 1194 | WireGuard refuses to complete |
| OpenVPN TCP | 443 or 1194 | the network discards UDP |
| IKEv2 | UDP 500 | phones switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data |
OpenVPN over TCP deserves special mention: it can run on port 443, the same one ordinary HTTPS uses, so restrictive networks rarely close it. The full port reference is on the IPVanish protocols page. Copy port numbers exactly: one wrong digit in a firewall rule and the tunnel never comes up. If one city connects but delivers nothing, choosing a different location rules out a faulty or overloaded box.
Firewalls, antivirus and rival VPN software
Antivirus web shields and third-party firewalls may treat tunnel traffic as hostile until IPVanish gets an exception. Two VPN clients on one machine also compete for the network adapter; remove the one you dropped.
Connected, but pages will not load: DNS and the kill switch
Compare your visible IP before and after connecting. No change means the tunnel never came up. When the internet vanishes after you disconnect, leftover IPVanish DNS settings are to blame: on Windows, reset the stack with the netsh int ip reset command in an administrator Command Prompt, then restart the machine. The kill switch is part of the same picture: it deliberately cuts all traffic once the tunnel drops, so the device sits offline until the VPN reconnects or you switch the VPN off.
IPVanish on Fire TV, Fire Stick and Fire TV Cube
The first-generation Fire Stick (FCC ID 2ABDU-0509) cannot run the app properly even when it installs; you need second generation or newer. On supported hardware, the official remedy is to force-stop IPVanish, clear its data and cache, then reboot the Fire device. Shaky Wi-Fi is another frequent cause, so test a stick near the router or a Cube over a wired link. With older Cube software, exiting via the Back button ends the VPN session, while the Home button keeps it running.
Networks and countries that block VPN traffic
Enable Obfuscation in the app settings when a restrictive network detects tunnel traffic. It is the main defence IPVanish ships here, and its reach is limited: VPNRadarLab scores the bypass sub-index 1.9 out of 10 because newer stealth protocols such as VLESS/Reality, Shadowsocks or obfs4 are absent. On heavily filtered networks, expect misses.
Streaming sites that reject the connection
IPVanish advertises "Safe Streaming" but promises no specific Netflix library. If a service answers with a proxy error, test another of the 3,400 servers across 150 locations; when every server fails, the platform has blocked those IPs.
Handing it to IPVanish support
Live chat is staffed around the clock, email covers tickets, and Complete and Advanced plans add phone support. Generate the diagnostics file in the app and attach it, letting the agent skip the basic questions. Other providers are covered in our VPN troubleshooting hub.
FAQ
How do I know if IPVanish is down?
Check the official status page. Green systems with a failing connection point to a local cause.
IPVanish says connected, so why does nothing load?
Typically DNS leftovers, a faulty server or the kill switch cutting traffic. Switch location first, then reset DNS.
Why will IPVanish not connect on my Fire Stick?
Either the stick is first-generation and cannot run the app, or cached data is corrupt. Confirm the hardware, then force-stop, clear data and cache, and restart.
Short answer
Status page, internet without VPN, renewal date, protocol switch, another location, firewall exception, DNS reset, then support with diagnostics.
