PureVPN not working: how to get the app connecting again

3 things to check, built from what PureVPN publishes about its apps, protocols and support. We do not test connections ourselves.

What to check

Switch protocol in the app: PureVPN lists WireGuard, OpenVPN, IKEv2.

If the network blocks VPNs, turn on obfuscation (obfuscated servers disguise as HTTPS).

Contact support: live chat, email.

Account trouble, a bad location, the protocol the app picked silently, or something on your own device: one of these sits behind most PureVPN connection failures. Check them one by one before opening a support chat. A network that deliberately hunts VPN traffic is the exception, and there PureVPN has fewer cards to play than some rivals.

Account, device limit or your own connection

Disconnect the VPN and load a couple of plain websites first. If those fail too, the router or the ISP is at fault, so restart it before blaming the app. With a healthy connection, look at the account: a lapsed subscription or a mistyped email stops the app from connecting even though everything else works. The password can be reset through the "Forgot your password" link on the sign-in screen, which emails you a reset.

Logins shared across a family run into the cap of 10 devices at once per account, and the eleventh device gets refused. That cap holds unless you add the paid Multi-login add-on, which extends it by another 10. Fair use allows up to 300 sessions a day.

Turning off Automatic protocol selection

The app hides which protocol it uses while the automatic option stays on. On Windows: the Settings icon in the left panel, the Protocol tab, switch the automatic selection off, confirm with Proceed, then pick from the drop-down. On iPhone: the menu icon top left, Settings, the Advanced tab, Connection Protocol, switch off the automatic option, confirm with Yes and choose from the list. Test them one at a time, because some school, office or carrier networks block one protocol while passing another.

Protocol Try it when Worth knowing
WireGuard the tunnel is slow on a shared IP PureVPN's advice for shared-IP users
OpenVPN UDP traffic looks filtered TCP flavour gets through where UDP is blocked
IKEv2 you pay for a dedicated IP the pick PureVPN suggests for that add-on

Changing location, or another city in the same country

One server can sit down or be unreachable from your ISP while everything around it works. Pick a nearby country, or dig into the city list under your usual one. Note the exact name of any location that keeps failing: support asks for it when investigating that server.

Antivirus, stale installs and the network reset

A security suite can strangle the tunnel without announcing it, so add PureVPN to the exception list instead of leaving protection off. An outdated app build causes failed connections that a fresh install clears. A full network-settings reset is the last self-service step, since it wipes broken adapter and DNS settings.

Connected, yet pages hang

When the tunnel briefly drops, the kill switch cuts all traffic on purpose, and that looks exactly like "no internet". DNS leak protection keeps lookups within the tunnel as well. Split tunnelling helps you test whether one particular app is the problem by routing it around the VPN.

Fine on Wi-Fi, dead on mobile data

Mobile networks sometimes shut ports that home broadband keeps open, so a protocol swap is where to start on cellular.

Networks that block VPNs

Obfuscated servers are PureVPN's answer to strict networks: they dress VPN traffic up as ordinary HTTPS and switch on automatically rather than through a separate menu. Multiport hunts for a blocked port and moves to an open one. The catch: PureVPN publishes none of the modern stealth protocols (VLESS Reality, Trojan, Shadowsocks, Hysteria2, AmneziaWG, obfs4), which is why the censorship-bypass sub-score sits at 1.9 out of 10. If your network filters harder than obfuscated servers can handle, other providers appear in the obfuscated VPNs list.

Streaming refuses to play

PureVPN promises nothing for Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Disney+ or Prime Video. Its help centre suggests streaming shortcuts in the Locations menu and clearing the browser or app cache, and it does not recommend dedicated IPs for streaming.

Handing it to PureVPN support

Live chat runs 24/7 from the app menu (Menu, then Live Chat), and email tickets, the help centre, Discord and Reddit cover the rest. PureVPN does not publish a server status page, so chat is the quickest way to learn whether a location is down. When you contact support, name the location you cannot connect to, since that lets them investigate that server; it also pays to mention the protocols you already tried. PureVPN's Windows troubleshooting guide documents the self-service steps.

PureVPN connection questions

How do I tell whether PureVPN itself is down?

Live chat is the only official source, as the provider publishes no server status page. Compare a second location first.

Why does the connection keep cutting out?

Usually a server having a bad day, or a protocol your network dislikes; the kill switch then makes each drop look total. Change both.

Why does the login fail?

Check the registered email, confirm the plan hasn't expired, then reset the password from the sign-in screen.

The fix order to keep

Test the bare internet, verify the plan and login, move to another location, switch off automatic protocol selection and walk the list, add PureVPN as an exception in your antivirus or security suite, then update or reinstall the app and reset network settings. If that whole sequence changes nothing, live chat takes over. Other providers have their own pages in the VPNRadarLab troubleshooting hub.
