Hide.me VPN not working: SoftEther, StealthGuard and other usual suspects
3 things to check, built from what Hide.me publishes about its apps, protocols and support. We do not test connections ourselves.
What to check
Switch protocol in the app: Hide.me lists WireGuard, OpenVPN, IKEv2, SSTP, SoftEther.
If the network blocks VPNs, turn on obfuscation (StealthGuard; SoftEther for censorship).
Contact support: live chat, Telegram, email.

Most Hide.me connection failures trace back to a filtered protocol, a firewall or router dropping the tunnel, mis-entered account details, or an in-app feature that cuts traffic deliberately. The sections below take each cause in turn.
Narrow the fault down before touching settings
Disconnect and load any website without the VPN. If a page still fails to load, the fault sits with your line, so restart the router before blaming the app. When the web is fine without the tunnel, switch to another location and reconnect; one dead city while the rest work suggests a routing issue support should hear about. Last, test from a mobile hotspot. A tunnel that comes up on mobile data but dies at home points to the network in between as the obstacle.
Switching between SoftEther, WireGuard, OpenVPN, IKEv2 and SSTP
Hide.me runs WireGuard, OpenVPN, IKEv2, SSTP and SoftEther, and its help pages name SoftEther as the client's default, which an ISP or a country may block. Their instruction is to disconnect before changing protocol or location, then reconnect on another protocol.
| Protocol | Try it when |
|---|---|
| SoftEther | the default stalls on one network only |
| WireGuard | you want speed and UDP isn't filtered |
| OpenVPN TCP | UDP looks blocked on hotel or office Wi-Fi |
| IKEv2 | a phone hopping between Wi-Fi and mobile data |
| SSTP | strict filtering you can't otherwise cross |
Firewalls, routers and security suites
IKEv2 needs UDP ports 500 and 4500 plus the ESP protocol (50) let through by any firewall on the machine. On routers, look for the VPN passthrough option: without it, some devices stop the tunnel before it starts. Security suites are a classic culprit too. Pause the antivirus for a minute and reconnect; if that works, add Hide.me as an exception and switch off any "Scan SSL" option, because inspecting encrypted packets breaks them. One overlooked Windows case: the error "The required hide.me system service could not be started" means the background service didn't launch. Open the Services console, start "hide.me VPN service" by hand, and check the Windows Event Log service is running too.
Free plan, username and clock problems that look like a broken VPN
The Free plan caps you at 8 locations, 1 device and restricted speed, so a second device losing connection is the limit working as designed. Premium lifts that to 10 devices at once, all locations, plus a fixed IP and port forwarding. Login failures are usually simpler than they look: the username is generally not your email address, and typing the email is a common reason the connection is refused. A wrong date on the device clock breaks the handshake as well. Third-party OpenVPN apps and config files require Premium; Free users get OpenVPN only inside the Hide.me app.
The tunnel is up and pages still fail
Test DNS first: switch to 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1, because some ISPs poison DNS records to block addresses. Then check StealthGuard. It binds chosen apps, or the whole connection, to the VPN, so those apps lose access whenever the tunnel drops, which feels exactly like a bug. The kill switch is off by default, so it's rarely the cause unless you enabled it. Split tunnelling works the other way round and leaves an excluded app outside the tunnel, exposing your real IP. The browser extension for Chrome, Edge and Firefox is only a proxy: it covers browser traffic, nothing else.
Censored countries and filtered networks
VPNRadarLab scores Hide.me's censorship bypass at 1.9 of 10 (security sits at 2.5) because VLESS Reality, Trojan, Shadowsocks and Hysteria2 are not listed among its obfuscation tools, while SoftEther and StealthGuard are. The provider runs its own network of 2600 servers, with locations in Dubai, Cairo, Marrakesh and Istanbul for the Middle East and North Africa. Prepare two or three protocols before you travel; for a broader view, see the VPNRadarLab ranking of VPNs with obfuscation for blocked networks.
Outages and getting Hide.me support involved
Hide.me does not publish a status page, and third-party outage trackers only collect user complaints. The direct routes are live chat and email to support@hide.me, with Telegram, Discord and a community forum alongside. The most effective path is the in-app ticket: Settings, then the Support tab, where you describe the problem, attach the log file, and name the protocol, location and network you tested.
Hide.me connection questions
Why does the app reject my email as the username?
The username is usually not the email address: the app expects the username you registered with. Check it in your account details.
Does the browser extension cover other apps?
No. It proxies browser traffic only.
Can a Free account use OpenVPN outside the app?
No. Config files for third-party OpenVPN clients come with Premium.
Hide.me repair sequence
Check your line without the tunnel, try another location, switch protocol, review firewall and router settings, confirm the username and system clock, test DNS, check StealthGuard and split tunnelling, then send support a ticket with logs. For more detail, see the official help on connection failures and pages not loading while connected.
