ExpressVPN not working or stuck on connecting: fixes by symptom

3 things to check, built from what ExpressVPN publishes about its apps, protocols and support. We do not test connections ourselves.

What to check

Switch protocol in the app: ExpressVPN lists WireGuard, OpenVPN, IKEv2, Own protocol.

If the network blocks VPNs, turn on obfuscation (obfuscation).

Contact support: live chat, email.

ExpressVPN's own help names a few likely causes behind a failed connection: a location down for maintenance, a protocol your network filters, security software blocking the tunnel, or a kill switch following its settings too literally. Load a site with the VPN off first; if it opens, update the app, change location and clear the antivirus suspects.

Match the ExpressVPN symptom to the fix

Symptom Likely cause First move
"Unable to Connect" or endless connecting location in maintenance, filtered protocol another location, another protocol
Connected but pages won't load browser proxy, antivirus, filtered protocol proxy off, antivirus exception
Internet gone after disconnecting kill switch on "Enable at all times", DNS left behind kill switch setting, DNS reset
Sites blank or refusing to load Advanced Protection, VPN IP block, location check blocker off, split tunnelling
App won't open unsupported OS, broken install clean reinstall

ExpressVPN stuck on connecting or showing "Unable to Connect"

A dead browser with the VPN disconnected points at your router or ISP, not ExpressVPN. Install any pending app update first, then pick a different location from the Recommended list; if the tunnel comes up, the previous one was likely in maintenance, and you can report it to support.

Automatic usually picks Lightway, ExpressVPN's own protocol, the one the provider calls its fastest. When it stalls, switch protocols manually and reconnect after every change:

Protocol Transport Pick it when
Lightway UDP UDP first manual try
Lightway TCP TCP networks that may filter UDP
WireGuard UDP Lightway fails both ways
OpenVPN TCP/UDP TCP, UDP restrictive hotel or office Wi-Fi
IKEv2 IPsec last resort

A dedicated IP requires Lightway: the protocol must be set to Lightway for it. The official connection guide lists the same order.

When your antivirus, firewall or proxy blocks the tunnel

Pause your security suite briefly and try connecting. If that restores the tunnel, add ExpressVPN as an exception and mark it trusted. Some products need the security level lowered from High to Medium, or UDP ports 1194 to 1204 allowed. A browser proxy can also stop pages from loading once the VPN is up; disable it.

No internet with ExpressVPN on, or after you switch it off

The kill switch, called Network Lock and now Internet Kill Switch, ships enabled on desktop and cuts traffic whenever the tunnel looks shaky. On "Enable at all times", it stays active even after a deliberate disconnect. On iOS it cannot be switched off. If Windows stays offline with the VPN disconnected, the adapter probably kept ExpressVPN's DNS: restore automatic DNS resolution there. Blank pages while connected often point to Advanced Protection (Threat Manager) stripping tracking scripts the site needs; turn it off to test, or use split tunnelling to keep the browser out of the tunnel.

Netflix, banking apps and other services that reject the VPN

ExpressVPN publishes no claim about unblocking Netflix, BBC iPlayer or Disney+, and its terms forbid dodging regional limits set by content providers, so no fix here can promise a stream. A Smart DNS feature, MediaStreamer, also exists. Some services block known VPN IP addresses or check the device location. Banks and government apps read the phone's location too: disable location services, use the ExpressVPN browser extension (Chrome, Firefox, Edge) with its "Spoof your location" option, and connect to a server in the region where the account normally lives.

The app crashes, will not open or keeps disconnecting

Check the OS floor first: Windows 10 or later, macOS 11 or later, Android 7.0 or later, iOS 15 or later. Then reinstall cleanly: uninstall, restart the device, install the latest version. On Windows, the ExpressVPN service can be restarted in services.msc; on Android and iOS, the beta app may already contain the fix. For Android tunnels that drop on their own, ExpressVPN names battery optimization (known on Huawei and Samsung) and other VPN apps or profiles as causes: remove other VPN apps, exempt ExpressVPN from battery saving, and disconnect from within the app rather than quick tiles.

Networks and countries that block VPN traffic

For hostile networks ExpressVPN offers Lightway obfuscation and little else: no VLESS Reality, Trojan, Shadowsocks, Hysteria2 or AmneziaWG, which is why its bypass sub-index at VPNRadarLab is 1.9 of 10. The service is not offered in Export Control Policy countries, and in heavily censored ones the official advice is to contact support. Tools built for DPI are compared on VPNRadarLab's stealth VPN page.

Getting ExpressVPN support to look at it

In the app, go to Help, Contact Us, Issues with the VPN service, Connection Issues, and leave the diagnostic information attached; the reply comes by email. Live chat and email to support@expressvpn.com work as well.

ExpressVPN connection FAQ

Is ExpressVPN down today?

If one location fails while others connect, that server is at fault.

Why does my dedicated IP not connect?

It requires Lightway, so set the protocol to Lightway.

Does ExpressVPN work on Firestick and routers?

Yes: apps exist for Fire TV, Apple TV, Android TV and routers including Aircove.

ExpressVPN not working: the short version

Check the internet with the VPN disconnected, update, switch location, then work down the protocol table and clear the antivirus and kill switch suspects. Still stuck: send diagnostics through the in-app form. Other providers are covered in the VPN not working hub.
