If the renewal bill is what annoys you, move to a service that bills the same at renewal as it did at sign-up: Private Internet Access, Hide.me, LunoVPN or MonVPN. For more privacy paperwork than one audit, Proton VPN and LunoVPN publish a transparency report plus a warrant canary. If the complaint is thin censorship bypass, switching will not help much: ExpressVPN scores 1.9 there, and the top alternative reaches only 2.4. Signed up just to try it? Stay and cancel before the renewal date, since the intro terms are fair.
Where ExpressVPN's 4.77 comes from
The service does several things right. An independent KPMG audit checks the no-logs claim, Cure53 audited the TrustedServer architecture, servers run in RAM-only mode, and there is an in-house Lightway protocol alongside 113 countries and 10 Gbps servers. Device support is generous too: 10 simultaneous connections on Basic, 12 on Advanced, 14 on Pro, plus apps for routers, TVs and consoles.
Two pillars pull the overall mark down. Price and terms gets 3.1 of 10, mostly because the renewal ratio is 2.79: after the first 28 months, Basic jumps to $99.95 a year. Censorship bypass is the lowest pillar of all at 1.9. ExpressVPN has a stealth (obfuscation) mode but offers none of VLESS Reality, Trojan, Shadowsocks or Hysteria2, and the best bypass sub-score among the alternatives is 2.4.
Leaving because of the renewal price
Compare what you pay in year three, not the advertised monthly figure. Intro discounts end; the auto-renew does not.
| Service | Cheapest first-term month | What the renewal says | Ratio |
|---|---|---|---|
| ExpressVPN | $2.99 | $99.95/year on Basic after 28 months | 2.79 |
| Private Internet Access | $1.89 | same $73.71 every 3 years | 1.08 |
| Hide.me | €2.69 | same price and duration ("pricing guarantee") | 1.00 |
| LunoVPN | $2.50 | renewal price not stated separately | 1.00 |
| MonVPN | €2.49 | flat renewal | 1.00 |
| Proton VPN | $3.49 | $83.88/year after $83.76 for 24 months | 2.00 |
| NordVPN | $3.49 | $139.08/year on Basic | 3.32 |
| IPVanish | $2.39 | $99.99/year on Essential | 3.49 |
Flat renewal pricing is where the escape is. The twist: Proton VPN costs almost the same upfront as ExpressVPN ($83.76 for 24 months versus $83.72 for 28 months, as the Proton VPN against ExpressVPN comparison shows) but renews about $16 a year cheaper than ExpressVPN Basic. A higher overall score does not mean a cheaper renewal either: NordVPN outscores ExpressVPN and still bills $139.08 a year after the promo ends. X-VPN, Surfshark and ZoogVPN publish no renewal amount at all, which is its own kind of warning.
A free plan or a trial before you commit
ExpressVPN has no free tier and no trial; the 30-day money-back guarantee substitutes for both, and it applies to new subscribers only. Renewals are excluded. Four alternatives run permanent free plans, while Surfshark and PureVPN give 7-day trials on paid plans. Refund windows vary elsewhere too: CyberGhost VPN allows 45 days on plans of 6 months or longer, PureVPN 31 days, while ZoogVPN and MonVPN allow only 7, which is barely time to notice a problem.
More privacy proof than one audit
An audit is a snapshot of one moment. When a court order arrives, what matters is a published transparency report and a warrant canary that quietly disappears if the provider gets gagged.
| Service | Privacy sub-score | Transparency report | Warrant canary | Multi-hop | Account-number login |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ExpressVPN | 5.7 | does not publish | does not publish | no | no |
| X-VPN | 8.0 | yes | does not publish | not published | no |
| LunoVPN | 7.7 | yes | yes | not published | yes (16-digit number) |
| NordVPN | 6.3 | yes | does not publish | yes | no |
| Private Internet Access | 6.3 | yes | does not publish | yes | no |
| Proton VPN | 6.0 | yes | yes | yes (Secure Core) | no |
LunoVPN is the only alternative here with an account-number login, using a random 16-digit number in place of an email address. ExpressVPN records only the date (not the time) of a successful connection, which is a fair trade-off, but the missing canary and report, plus the email requirement and the lack of an account-number login, are among the reasons its privacy pillar loses points. Multi-hop, absent here, is available from several rivals if you need traffic to exit through a second country.
Moving to another Kape brand
Private Internet Access, CyberGhost VPN and Intego Privacy Protection VPN all sit under Kape Technologies, the same parent as ExpressVPN. Moving between them swaps the app, the pricing table and the refund rules, yet the company at the top is unchanged. If ownership is what drives you away, cross these off first and check who owns ExpressVPN before assuming a smaller brand means a cleaner structure.
Who should keep ExpressVPN
Stay for the wide server map, diskless servers, the named auditor and the generous device allowance, or if you pay once for a long term and cancel before the renewal hits. The full side-by-side with Private Internet Access shows how close the trade-offs are: see ExpressVPN against Private Internet Access.
Which alternative for which complaint
Renewal shock: pick a service with flat renewal pricing. No free way to test: a free tier or a short trial. Thin privacy paperwork: a rival with a report and a canary. Ownership concerns: avoid the Kape sister brands. Heavy censorship: nothing on this list fixes it.
