Take NordVPN if the fuller feature set matters most; take ExpressVPN if a lower bill after the first contract is the priority. On our scoring NordVPN takes 5.58 out of 10 against ExpressVPN's 4.77. Nord leads in four of the six scored areas, two end level, and ExpressVPN leads in none. Its ground is money and hardware coverage: a cheaper entry price, a smaller renewal jump on every tier, and 12 supported platforms against 9.

What puts NordVPN ahead in four areas, and why two stay level

Security is the biggest reason: Nord publishes post-quantum encryption across its apps, two-factor sign-in, Double VPN multi-hop and a HackerOne bug bounty. ExpressVPN states it has no multi-hop and publishes none of the other three, so audits claw some ground back: KPMG checked its policy and servers, Cure53 its TrustedServer setup. Both ship a kill switch (Network Lock on Express), DNS leak protection, WireGuard, RAM-only servers and each side's own protocol.

Network is the second gap: Nord names 7,115 servers in 150 countries, P2P servers and port forwarding, while ExpressVPN publishes no server count, no torrenting policy and no port forwarding, and those rows score zero. Privacy differs by one document: Nord runs a quarterly transparency report, and its Trust Center carries it. Support goes to Nord because its chat is advertised as running around the clock.

Obfuscation is the only counted bypass item for both, so that area ties low. Price and fair terms tie too: Express is cheaper upfront (€2.57 against €3.00 in our euro conversion) and renews lower on every tier; Nord wins the difference back with cash payment.

Logging and ownership: Panama against the British Virgin Islands

NordVPN runs under nordvpn S.A. in Panama, owned by Nord Security. ExpressVPN operates as Express Technologies Ltd. in the British Virgin Islands under Kape Technologies PLC, a UK company. Neither territory sits in the 5, 9 or 14 Eyes alliances, and both policies are independently audited no-logs: Nord's verified five times since 2018, Express's by KPMG.

If nobody tallying your megabytes matters, the bandwidth row is where to look.

Routers, consoles and device caps on ExpressVPN's side

Both cover the main desktop, mobile and TV systems plus browser extensions; Express adds its Aircove router, Fire TV and game consoles, reaching 12 platforms against Nord's 9. Device caps rise with Express's tiers, 10, 12 and 14, while Nord holds a flat 10. The platforms and support score still goes to Nord: it advertises live chat around the clock, while ExpressVPN has live chat but does not publish its hours.

The first bill and the renewal bill, tier by tier

Prices in dollars, sales tax may apply; the 2-year deal runs 27 months at NordVPN and 28 months at ExpressVPN.

Tier pair NordVPN first term ExpressVPN first term NordVPN renews yearly at ExpressVPN renews yearly at
Basic / Basic $94.23 ($3.49/mo) $83.72 ($2.99/mo) $139.08 $99.95
Complete / Advanced $121.23 ($4.49/mo) $125.72 ($4.49/mo) $219.48 $119.95
Prime / Pro $202.23 ($7.49/mo) $209.72 ($7.49/mo) $296.28 $199.95

Intro rates sit close together on the middle and top tiers; the gap opens once the first long term is over and both move to yearly renewal. Nord's upper tiers bundle antivirus, a password manager and 1 TB of encrypted cloud storage. Express's Advanced and Pro add ExpressKeys, Identity Defender with $3M or $5M insurance and a 3 GB eSIM.

Getting money back and paying without a card

Both give a 30-day refund, though Express reserves it for new subscribers and keeps renewals and redemption codes out; store purchases go through Apple or Google at both. Nord's checkout covers cash through prepaid retail cards, several coins and local bank methods. Express accepts Bitcoin as its only coin, plus gift cards, and switches auto-renewal off when you pay in Bitcoin.

NordVPN vs ExpressVPN: questions from search

Which one is faster?

NordVPN cites 800+ Mbps from tests by Artifact Security and West Coast Labs and calls NordLynx its fastest protocol; ExpressVPN names Lightway as its fastest protocol and advertises 10 Gbps servers.

Can either one unblock Netflix or BBC iPlayer?

Neither names Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Disney+ or Prime Video. Express adds MediaStreamer Smart DNS for devices that can't run a VPN app.

Which is better for torrenting and gaming?

Nord, for file sharing: it publishes a torrenting policy, P2P servers and port forwarding. For console gaming, Express's router and console apps reach further.

Should Kape's ownership worry an ExpressVPN user?

Judge it by the paperwork: the operator is a BVI company under Kape Technologies, the no-logs policy passed a KPMG audit and the servers are RAM-only. The ExpressVPN ownership page lays out the chain.

Pick by how you will use it

  • Heavy downloader or Double VPN user: NordVPN, which names P2P servers and includes multi-hop.
  • Household with consoles, a router and a smart TV: ExpressVPN on Advanced or Pro for 12 to 14 device slots.
  • Cost-focused long-term subscriber: ExpressVPN, since every tier renews lower.

Nord takes the stronger disclosure record and toolset; Express takes the bill once the opening contract is behind you.
