Take ExpressVPN when the question is who can be forced to hand over your data; take Hotspot Shield when a low entry cost and a free fallback come first. ExpressVPN finishes ahead, though Hotspot Shield wins half of the scored areas.
Two wins, one tie, three losses: why ExpressVPN still leads
The two categories ExpressVPN takes, privacy and security, weigh more in the final score than the three it loses. Both services score the same on censorship bypass.
A US company with a 2017 complaint against a BVI one with RAM-only servers
The biggest privacy gap comes from where each company is registered. Hotspot Shield sits in the USA, a Five Eyes country, with Pango / Aura as parent. Express Technologies Ltd., the entity behind ExpressVPN, is registered in the British Virgin Islands with Kape Technologies PLC as parent, outside the 5, 9 and 14 Eyes alliances, and its policy says it answers to BVI law and will contest demands. Against Hotspot Shield on the record is a complaint about undisclosed data collection that the Center for Democracy and Technology brought to the FTC in 2017.
The two no-logs promises were checked to different depths: an audited no-logs policy is a heavier credential than a review of the policy document. KPMG audited ExpressVPN's practice, and Cure53 examined its server setup; Hotspot Shield's privacy policy was reviewed in August 2023, finding no plaintext IP logging. ExpressVPN admits it keeps the date of connections and total traffic per user; Hotspot Shield does not publish what it retains on session times.
Both ship a kill switch, DNS leak protection and WireGuard. The own protocols are Lightway (UDP and TCP) for ExpressVPN and the patented Hydra for Hotspot Shield. Each lists a single obfuscation mode and nothing more for getting past blocks.
Fewer countries, higher network score: Hotspot Shield's published servers and streaming claims
ExpressVPN covers 113 countries across 214 locations with 10 Gbps servers (40 Gbps on select ones), yet scores 4.6 against 6.8: it publishes no server count, names no streaming service and states no torrenting policy. Hotspot Shield lists 1,800+ servers on its locations page (800+ on the plan page) in 80+ countries, many virtual locations, and names Netflix, Disney+ and Prime Video in its claims with P2P allowed.
Four extra platforms for ExpressVPN, round-the-clock chat for Hotspot Shield
ExpressVPN builds apps for 12 platforms against 8, adding routers (including its own Aircove), Fire TV, Apple TV, consoles and Firefox and Edge extensions; Hotspot Shield's Linux app is command-line only. It still loses the platforms and support score, 7.1 to 8.1, because paid Hotspot Shield customers get 24/7 live chat while ExpressVPN states no round-the-clock hours. Device counts run 10/12/14 for ExpressVPN Basic/Advanced/Pro against 10 and 25 (Premium Family, up to 5 members) for Hotspot Shield; the free plan allows one device.
Intro price, renewal and the free tier
| Plan | Paid up front | Monthly equivalent | After the intro term |
|---|---|---|---|
| ExpressVPN Basic | $83.72 for 28 months | $2.99 | $99.95 a year |
| ExpressVPN Advanced | $125.72 for 28 months | $4.49 | $119.95 a year |
| ExpressVPN Pro | $209.72 for 28 months | $7.49 | $199.95 a year |
| Hotspot Shield Premium, yearly | $29 for 12 months | $2.42 | $95.99 a year |
| Hotspot Shield Premium, monthly | $1.99 for the first month | $1.99 | $12.99 a month |
| Hotspot Shield Basic | free | $0 | stays free |
Hotspot Shield's renewal rises by more (3.31x against 2.79x), and it still wins price and fair terms: the free tier, the 45-day refund and the lower entry point (€2.08 against €2.57 a month) outweigh the markup. Once both discounts lapse, the yearly bills sit $3.96 apart. ExpressVPN's intro covers 28 months, Hotspot Shield's only 12. The free Basic plan gives a daily data cap, a speed cap, one location and one device.
Refunds, crypto and switching off auto-renewal
Hotspot Shield refunds direct purchases in full within 45 days of enrollment, no questions asked; the 45-day rule covers sales on its own site. ExpressVPN refunds 30 days from the first purchase, new subscribers only, excluding renewals and redemption codes. Crypto users can pay ExpressVPN in Bitcoin, which switches auto-renewal off automatically; Hotspot Shield takes no cryptocurrency. Cancelling with Hotspot Shield means turning off auto-renewal in the account, while ExpressVPN offers My Subscription, chat or email.
