Proton VPN not connecting or not working? Causes and fixes

5 things to check, built from what Proton VPN publishes about its apps, protocols and support. We do not test connections ourselves.

What to check

Check the provider’s status page for an outage (System status).

Switch protocol in the app: Proton VPN lists WireGuard, OpenVPN, Own protocol.

If the network blocks VPNs, turn on obfuscation (Stealth; alternative routing).

Contact support: live chat, Telegram, email.

If the website is blocked too, use the mirror or channel (Telegram channel (social); alternative routing via third-party networks).

Start with the System status page, switch servers, then switch protocol (use Stealth where the network filters VPN traffic), and only after that touch antivirus, proxy settings or the system clock. Free-plan limits can look like a fault and should be ruled out too.

Is Proton VPN down, or is it your connection?

Check status.proton.me before touching settings. Proton shows the services and the server fleet as separate entries there, so a red line saves an hour of blind reconfiguring. If all is green, drop the VPN and load a plain website: no pages loading points at the Wi-Fi or the ISP, and tethering to phone data confirms it. Another quiet culprit is a lapsed subscription: the account falls back to Free, which accepts only free servers, and that reads like "Proton stopped connecting".

Proton VPN stuck on connecting: change server and protocol

Individual machines go offline for maintenance, so one dead country is routine; pick another. When every location fails to connect, the protocol itself is at fault. Smart Protocol tries the available options until one connects; if it keeps failing, pick manually.

Option When to pick it
Smart Protocol Default; leave it unless it fails repeatedly
WireGuard UDP Suits open home networks where nothing filters UDP
WireGuard TCP Networks that block or throttle UDP
Stealth Firewalls that fingerprint VPN handshakes
OpenVPN The option for manual setup in third-party clients

Stealth wraps WireGuard in TLS, so a filter sees something close to a regular HTTPS session. Per Proton, TCP mode helps on filtered networks yet will not defeat advanced DPI, while Stealth can get past some DPI techniques.

Firewall, antivirus, proxy and the system clock

Security suites sometimes flag the tunnel as suspicious traffic; whitelist the Proton app instead of switching protection off. Proton's guide to connection problems covers this fix and the clock one. A leftover system or browser proxy breaks the handshake too. The sneakiest cause is the clock: a wrong date fails the certificate check, and the app reports a sign-in error instead of a time problem.

Proton VPN free not connecting

Some free-plan limits behave like a fault.

Limit Free Paid
Devices at once 1 10
Countries 10, assigned randomly 140+
Speed Medium Uncapped
Streaming, P2P No Yes
Server change Random, with cooldown Any server

The next free server is chosen at random, with a 45-second cooldown after the first change and 10 minutes between further ones. One device is the cap, so a laptop and phone cannot both use Free at once.

Blocked at school, the office or on a national network

Managed and state-run networks hunt for VPN fingerprints. Stealth plus alternative routing, which pushes app traffic over networks run by third parties, is Proton's answer, and the Telegram channel stays reachable when the website itself is blocked. The ceiling is low, though: no VLESS Reality, Trojan, Shadowsocks, Hysteria2 or obfs4 are on offer, hence the censorship-bypass sub-score of 2.4 of 10. Under aggressive DPI, check the VPNRadarLab stealth VPN list for tools built for that job.

Connected, but Netflix, torrents or websites fail

Streaming and torrenting belong to paid plans, so Free blocks them by design. On paid tiers, use the highlighted Netflix locations (US, UK, France), clear cookies and log in to the service before connecting. Once the tunnel drops, the kill switch holds traffic until the VPN reconnects, so pages stop loading; repair the tunnel rather than switching protection off.

Platform notes

On macOS the network extension has to be installed before a protocol switch is possible. The Linux app shows Smart Protocol and Stealth only with Proton Protocols (beta) enabled. Split tunnelling is available on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, Android TV and in the extension; iOS is not on that list.

Proton VPN not working FAQ

Is Proton VPN down right now?

The System status page shows the services and the server fleet as separate entries.

Why does it keep disconnecting?

Weak Wi-Fi, an ISP fault and server maintenance are the causes Proton's help names. Try the hotspot test or another location.

Can I use Proton VPN without the app?

Yes, through OpenVPN set up in a third-party client, but it requires the separate OpenVPN credentials from your account rather than your usual Proton login.

Quick fix order

Status page first, then a different server, then Smart Protocol or Stealth, then the antivirus exception, the proxy and the clock. Free users should account for the one-device cap and the cooldown between changes. Paid plans get priority live chat; the rest is handled by the support form, Telegram channel and help articles.
