Proton VPN user reviews: connection trouble, free-plan limits and billing disputes

5,091 reviews of Proton VPN collected from Trustpilot, App Store and Google Play. Most come from App Store: 3.46 of 5 after smoothing. Reviews never change our score.

Ratings by source

Smoothed: a source’s average across all VPNs counts as 50 extra reviews, so a few five-star reviews cannot outrank thousands.

On Reddit and forums

46 Reddit and forum threads mention Proton VPN (we keep titles and search snippets only).

Trustpilot reviewers give Proton VPN a rough ride, written App Store reviews are mixed but improving, and Google Play is mostly positive. The complaints follow the same pattern everywhere: a tunnel that fails or crawls comes first, then the limits of the free plan and surprise renewal bills. The service itself holds a 6.12 of 10 in the VPNRadarLab ranking, 2nd of 377, and that score is built from published facts alone, never from reviews.

Where Proton VPN reviewers are most and least satisfied

Source Collected reviews Smoothed average All-VPN average Last 90 days Negative / replied
Trustpilot 200 2.49 3.66 88 at 2.11 139 of 200 / 138 answered
App Store 2,491 3.46 3.54 1,030 at 3.72 833 / none answered
Google Play 2,400 4.24 3.90 1,640 at 4.25 341 / all 341 answered

Each source's average across all VPNs counts as 50 extra reviews, so a small sample cannot outrank a large one. The platform badges tell a friendlier story because they fold in a large number of star-only ratings without any text: Google Play shows 4.7 from 1.41M ratings and 100M+ installs, the US App Store 4.64 from 119,750 ratings, while Trustpilot's own page shows a TrustScore of 2.2 from 991 reviews, where nearly every rating carries text. The written numbers sit lower on every store for exactly that reason.

Store fronts and languages with the lowest averages

The UK (3.78) and France (3.76) lead the App Store sample; UAE (2.48) and Egypt (2.54) close it. In the Emirati storefront 59% of reviews are negative, and about one in five of those names a country, against fewer than one in ten elsewhere; the reviews name the country, and this article does not judge whether the service works in any country. By language on Android, Italian is the warmest at 4.47, Dutch (4.05) and German (4.07) the coolest.

What pushes reviewers to one or two stars

The keyword counts below are approximate (one review can hit several themes):

Theme of negative reviews App Store Google Play Trustpilot
Connection, speed, servers, app not working ~53% ~40% ~46%
Free-plan limits or push to pay ~23% ~18% ~29%
Billing, renewal, refunds ~15% ~12% ~45%
Support small small ~32%

Two causes dominate. The tunnel either will not come up or moves at a crawl. And money: either the free tier falls short, or the renewal charge was not what the reviewer expected. On Trustpilot a refund is named in about one in five negative reviews, and support appears there several times more often than in the app stores.

Free-plan limits and renewal terms behind the complaints

The free plan covers one device at medium speed in 10 randomly chosen countries (the home page says 5), with no streaming, P2P or NetShield. That produces the recurring "nothing works until you pay" complaints, about 22% of all negative reviews. On the paid side, auto-renewal is on by default and the 2-year intro term at $83.76 renews yearly at $83.88, roughly doubling the yearly cost. Refunds apply only to the first purchase, once, within 30 days, on direct purchases only; cash and bank transfer payments are excluded. There is no free trial, the free plan plus the money-back window stand in for it. The refund rules are explained on the refund policy page.

Praise in four- and five-star reviews

Speed is the most common praise overall (about 10% of all positive reviews), and on Trustpilot privacy comes next, with reviewers citing the Swiss base. Ease of use earns App Store praise, while on Android much of the goodwill is one-liners: 926 of 1,919 positive reviews run under 15 characters.

Are the reviews getting better?

App Store monthly averages climbed from 2.55–2.75 early in 2026 to 3.62–4.10 since June. Trustpilot stayed flat between 1.83 and 2.88, Google Play steady between 4.03 and 4.55. Collected volume grew from 25 reviews in October 2025 to 1,265 in October 2026.

What Reddit and Linux forum threads ask

Titles in the 46 indexed threads keep asking what the catch of the free plan is, why the app fails to connect or install on certain Linux distributions, and whether long-time subscribers are right that speeds dropped.

Why the 6.12 score ignores all of this

The score counts published facts only. Network (8.7), security (7.9) and platform coverage (7.1) keep Proton VPN near the top, but bypass sits at 2.4: the Stealth protocol and mirror routes are listed, and little else that the ranking checks against censorship. Price and terms lose points to the renewal jump and the missing trial.

Proton VPN reviews FAQ

Is Proton VPN legit according to its users?

Yes. The anger is about speed, limits and bills, not about a service that disappeared.

Why is Proton VPN rated so low on Trustpilot?

139 of 200 written reviews are negative, and there the complaints split almost evenly between connections (46%) and money (45%).

Does Proton reply to negative reviews?

138 of 139 negative Trustpilot reviews and all 341 on Google Play got answers. In the App Store sample, none did.

Are the complaints mostly from free users?

About 22% of negative reviews are about the free plan or being pushed to pay; the other complaints are mostly about connections and billing.

Proton VPN user reviews in a few lines

Trustpilot reviews average 2.49 after smoothing, the App Store 3.46 and rising, Google Play 4.24. Failed or slow connections lead every complaint list, followed by free-plan limits and renewal charges. Check the connection troubleshooting if the tunnel misbehaves, and mark the renewal date before any upgrade.
