What you pay to keep Proton VPN running: the first term, then renewals at the published renewal price. Where no renewal price is published, plans shorter than a year are counted as repeat payments at the current price; longer plans show a dash after their term. Converted to euros at the rates used in our data (1 USD = €0.86). The lowest cost for each period is marked.

Renewal note
Plus 2y $83.76 first 24 months, renews $83.88 every 12 months; Unlimited renews $119.88/12 mo

The cheapest paid entry is the two-year Plus order at $83.76 upfront, which works out at $3.49 a month in US dollars. Once the first 24 months end, it renews yearly at $83.88, and the monthly cost roughly doubles to about $6.99. Against a market median of €3.13 for the cheapest monthly price across our ranking, the intro rate sits just under it; the renewal rate sits well above. Unlimited starts higher, at $191.76 for two years ($7.99 a month) and renews every 12 months at $119.88.

Plus or Proton Unlimited: what the extra money buys

What you get Free Plus Unlimited
Devices at once 1 10 10
Countries 10 random ones All (140+, 20000+ servers) All
Streaming, P2P with port forwarding No Yes Yes
NetShield ad blocker, Secure Core, priority live chat No Yes Yes
Proton Pass — Free tier Premium, with dark web monitoring
Proton Drive — 5 GB 500 GB
Proton Mail Premium No No Yes

The free plan costs nothing, carries no data cap and shows no ads, but it limits speed, countries and devices rather than traffic, and it offers no streaming, no P2P and no NetShield. Unlimited bundles the premium Mail, Pass and Drive tiers on top of exactly the same VPN you get with Plus, which is why the two plans diverge by $108.00 over the first 24 months. Proton mentions a Family plan in its FAQ (no price is given for it in our data), and business plans are sold separately. Proton sells no lifetime plan, no antivirus and no eSIM.

The bill after month 24

Auto-renewal is on by default, so the third year arrives as a $83.88 (Plus) or $119.88 (Unlimited) charge unless you switch billing off in the account dashboard or through support. The Plus step is the painful one: $3.49 becomes about $6.99 a month, a 2.0x jump. Unlimited climbs by about a quarter, which also narrows the yearly gap between the plans to $36.00 at renewal. The 65% and 38% discount badges compare the first term against the crossed-out monthly rate and say nothing about that third year. With one renewal counted, three years cost $167.64 on Plus and $311.64 on Unlimited.

How Proton VPN's rate compares with the market

Converted at 1 USD = €0.86, the Plus intro price of €3.00 a month sits just under the €3.13 market median; after renewal it runs about 1.9 times the median, and Unlimited opens at about €6.87 a month. Across the 73 services in our ranking with a known renewal ratio, 45 renew within 5% of their first price, so Proton's doubling on Plus is among the steeper jumps. That is where the VPNRadarLab "price and terms" sub-score of 5.35 loses its points: the renewal step costs 0.83 points, the average entry price earns only 1.25 of 2.5, and the trial criterion earns no points at all. Full marks go to the free plan, the 30-day refund window, ten devices, crypto and cash payment and self-service cancellation. Overall the service scores 6.12 of 10 and holds place 2 in our main ranking.

Paying with a card, PayPal, cash or Bitcoin

Visa, Mastercard, American Express and PayPal work at checkout. Anything outside that route runs on Proton credits: top the balance up with cash, a bank transfer or Bitcoin (BTC is the only coin) and the subscription draws from it, with no discount for paying in crypto. Refunds cover 30 days, first purchase only, one per user, direct purchases only, and cash or bank-transfer payments are excluded, as explained in our refund guide. Full pricing is on Proton's own page; if you want to model the cost across several devices, our cost calculator does the arithmetic.

Proton VPN pricing FAQ

Is there a monthly or yearly plan?

Both terms are sold, at a higher monthly rate than the two-year order; our table tracks two-year prices only.

Is there a free trial?

No timed trial exists. The free tier plus the 30-day money-back guarantee stand in for one.

Do students pay less?

Proton runs a student discount, linked in the footer of its site. Crypto payers get no reduction.

Which Proton VPN plan is worth paying for

Plus on the two-year order is the cheapest way in, so budget for the yearly renewal at $83.88 from the third year onward. Unlimited makes sense only for people who will actually use the bundled Mail, Pass and Drive tiers, since the VPN part is the same as Plus. The free plan carries no data cap and suits a first test.
