OllaVPN not working? Common causes and what to check

One protocol and obfuscation only in Frankfurt
OllaVPN connects via WireGuard only: OpenVPN and IKEv2 are not in the apps, so there is no way to switch to another protocol when something fails. Networks that block UDP or detect WireGuard, which includes some hotels, offices, and countries with censorship, break the connection entirely. Obfuscation exists, but only partially: MASQUE through port 443 works only on the Frankfurt exit. If the tunnel will not come up, pick that exit first. If it is blocked too, you will need a service from the list of VPNs with obfuscation.
A country in the list may have no server
The website promises more than 120 countries and says all of them are open, but the technology page lists exit servers only in Germany and the US, and the entry point for double VPN goes through Switzerland. If a location from the list will not connect, check Germany or the US: according to this data, real exits are currently only there.
Early app versions and free plan limits
A finished app exists only for Windows, version 2.4.0. On iOS it is an alpha in TestFlight, on Android there is a beta APK, a macOS app is planned, and there is nothing for Linux. Glitches on a phone at this stage are expected. On the free plan, speed is capped at 10 Mbit/s and only one device is allowed, so a second device on the same account will not connect, and a slow download may simply be the limit.
Where to report a failure
OllaVPN has a status page at status.ollavpn.com, but when we collected our data it was itself returning a Cloudflare 522 error, so an unreachable status page does not necessarily mean a server outage. There is no live chat. Free users only get the community, Pro includes priority email around the clock, and Business has a Slack channel with a response within 4 hours.
