Where to turn off renewal
Avast enables auto-renewal by default, and you manage it in your Avast Account, the same dashboard where your license is stored. Inside the Avast One app the subscription now goes by the name Premium VPN, so look for both names in the license list. If you bought the VPN through the App Store or Google Play, your Avast Account won't help; you need to cancel in the subscription settings of the store where the payment went through. The service doesn't say whether Avast reminds you about an upcoming charge, so don't count on an email.
Why you need to cancel early
The main trap is the timing. Under Avast's terms, the next year's payment can be taken up to 35 days before your subscription anniversary. If you plan to turn off renewal "on the last day", the charge may already have gone through by then. If you don't plan to renew, it's safer to switch off renewal right after the purchase. Whether access continues until the end of the paid term after cancellation is not stated on Avast's page.
How much renewal costs
The first payment comes with a discount, while renewal runs at the current price, which Avast puts at $99.99 per year, and the service warns that it may go up. For comparison, the first year costs $59.88 and two years $95.76, meaning a single renewal costs more than the entire two-year plan. Avast loses points in our rating of terms precisely because of this jump.
Can you get a refund after renewal?
Yes, Avast accepts a request within 30 days of the first purchase or of the renewal date. The terms are described on the Avast SecureLine VPN refund page.
How do other services handle this?
Cancellation procedures for other VPNs are collected in our how to cancel a VPN subscription section.
