Where the cancel switch lives depends on who billed you. A plan bought with a card or PayPal through the Hotspot Shield website is cancelled in your account dashboard: sign in, open Account info, press Cancel in the membership section. If the charge came from Apple or Google Play, the subscription belongs to that store and only its settings can end it. In every case Premium keeps working until the current paid term runs out, after which the account drops to the free Basic plan and no further payment is taken.

Who takes the money decides where you cancel

Check the receipt: it shows whether Apple, Google or Hotspot Shield took the payment. An Apple-billed subscription is beyond Hotspot Shield support; their staff cannot cancel it. A website purchase is handled in the Hotspot Shield account.

Switching off Premium renewal on the Hotspot Shield website

  1. Sign in to the Hotspot Shield account page in a browser.
  2. Open Account info in the left menu.
  3. Find the membership section and click Cancel there.
  4. Choose a reason for cancelling; picking Other reason asks for a short written explanation.

If anything gets stuck, the Support entry in that left-hand menu leads to live chat, which Premium customers can use around the clock. Note what this screen does and does not do: it stops the next automatic charge, but cancelling does not by itself return any money. The official support article confirms the account stays active until the subscription expires.

Purchases made on an iPhone, iPad or Mac

Apple-billed subscriptions are managed entirely in Apple's menus, and the Apple ID you sign in with must be the one that paid for Premium. Otherwise Hotspot Shield simply will not appear in the list. On iPhone or iPad: Settings, tap your name at the top, Subscriptions, select Hotspot Shield, Cancel Subscription. On a Mac, open the App Store, click your name at the bottom of the sidebar and choose View Information; scroll down to the Manage area, find the Subscriptions entry, click Edit beside Hotspot Shield and then Cancel Subscription. Apple documents the remaining routes, Windows and web included, in its subscription guide. If Hotspot Shield is missing from the list or no Cancel Subscription button appears, auto-renewal is already off.

Purchases made through Google Play on Android

Open the Play Store app on the paying Google account: profile icon at the top right, Payments & subscriptions, Subscriptions, pick Hotspot Shield, Cancel subscription, then follow the prompts. Uninstalling the VPN app ends nothing; billing continues at the store level until the subscription itself is cancelled there.

What Premium turns into after the last paid day

Until the paid term ends Once it has ended
Plan Premium (paid) Basic (free)
Daily data Unlimited 500 MB per day
Speed Standard Premium speed Capped at 2 Mbps
Locations 80+ countries, 1,800+ servers One virtual US location
Devices Up to 10 One
Streaming Supported Limited
Live chat 24/7 Included Not included

Basic also injects ads into the mobile apps, though watching them earns extra daily data. The free tier copes with checking mail and reading pages over café Wi-Fi, but it works on one device only and the 500 MB daily allowance runs out quickly.

Timing the switch-off before the price jumps

The intro price is the whole trick. A Premium year starts at $29 and renews at $95.99; monthly, the entry price is $1.99 before renewal at $12.99. That jump of roughly 3.3 times is the biggest single deduction in the price-and-terms sub-index, which sits at 3.7 out of 10, and Hotspot Shield does not say that it sends any reminder before renewing. So track the renewal date yourself. The cleanest habit: cancel right after paying. Every paid day stays yours, the next charge never happens. A direct purchase can be refunded in full within 45 days of enrollment, but only on request to support by email or chat, as described on the Hotspot Shield refund page.

Questions people ask about stopping Hotspot Shield

Does deleting the app end the subscription?

No. Billing lives in the Hotspot Shield account or in the store, never on the device.

Is there a free trial I need to stop?

There is no trial. New users get the free Basic plan and, on direct purchases, a 45-day money-back guarantee instead.

Will Basic ever bill me?

No. Basic is free, so nothing there renews.

Can Hotspot Shield support cancel an App Store purchase?

They cannot. Apple-billed plans end only through Apple's settings.

Hotspot Shield cancellation checklist

Website buyers cancel in the account dashboard, Apple buyers in Apple's subscription settings, signed in with the Apple ID that paid, Google Play buyers in the Play Store subscriptions screen. Premium lasts until the paid term finishes, then the account becomes free Basic. Switch auto-renewal off early, well before the renewal date; a refund, if needed, is a separate request.
