Hotspot Shield not working? Why it won't connect and what to change
3 things to check, built from what Hotspot Shield publishes about its apps, protocols and support. We do not test connections ourselves.
What to check
Switch protocol in the app: Hotspot Shield lists WireGuard, OpenVPN, IKEv2, Own protocol.
If the network blocks VPNs, turn on obfuscation (Traffic Obfuscation listed in Premium).
Contact support: live chat, email.

A spinning connect button, a tunnel that drops seconds after appearing, or an app that reports connection while no page loads: the likely culprit sits in the internet line, the protocol, the selected server, or a rival program rewriting network settings. The official sequence from the help centre is short: verify the internet with the app closed, relaunch the app, switch the protocol, pick a different virtual location, then contact support. Among likely causes the help centre names competing VPN or proxy tools, a strict firewall and an antivirus. On networks or in countries that filter VPN traffic, Traffic Obfuscation (listed in Premium) or a second device on another platform is the fallback.
Is it Hotspot Shield or your connection?
Close the app and load a familiar site; the troubleshooting articles at the help centre start from the same check. A page that opens means your line is fine, so relaunch the app rather than tapping connect again. If nothing loads, toggle Wi-Fi or mobile data, and failing that, check network settings or call the provider. Tethering through a phone is the quickest way to see whether one particular network is filtering you.
Hydra, WireGuard, IKEv2 or OpenVPN: switching the protocol
Networks sometimes strangle one protocol while another passes, so rotating it is the second move. Hydra, the in-house patented protocol described as the fastest, is the first one to try; WireGuard comes next, then IKEv2/IPSec and OpenVPN. The switch sits behind the gear icon on Windows and Mac under "Protocol", and on Android in the bottom-right corner of the main screen.
| Protocol | What the site data says | When to try it |
|---|---|---|
| Hydra | In-house patented protocol, described as the fastest | First attempt |
| WireGuard | Offered on Windows, Mac, Android, iOS | Hydra keeps spinning |
| IKEv2/IPSec | Listed among supported protocols | Both previous options stall |
| OpenVPN | Listed among supported protocols | The last of the four |
Picking another virtual location
One dead location points at that server; all of them failing points at a protocol or network problem. Hop to another country and, if it holds, return to the original later. The "Virtual Location" picker sits in the bottom-left corner. Free accounts have a single US location, so there is nothing to rotate into; upgrading changes that.
Basic limits that look like a fault
The free plan gives 500 MB a day, up to 2 Mbps, one US virtual location, one device and ads on mobile. Once the daily data runs out, pages crawl or stop, which mimics a breakdown but is simply the plan. Paid tiers (Plus 5, Premium 10, Premium Family 25 devices) remove the cap and add 24/7 chat.
Other VPNs, firewalls and antivirus that block the tunnel
Two VPN apps running together, or a VPN alongside a proxy-style browser extension on a Mac, fight over the same network settings and one of them loses; quit or remove the extra one. A tightly configured firewall on the device or network can stop traffic to the servers, and an antivirus can block the app outright, so pause it briefly as a test. On Windows, sign in with an administrator account, since a standard account can prevent connecting.
iPhone and iPad: removing old VPN profiles
Update to the latest build, confirm iOS 14 or later on a non-jailbroken device, and delete every profile in iOS Settings > VPN, including Hotspot Shield and any Personal VPN entry; they return when the VPN starts. Then use Settings > Re-install Profile in the app and cycle Airplane Mode, switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
Connected, but pages will not load
A dead page right after a disconnect is often the kill switch holding traffic until the tunnel returns. If the app reports connection yet nothing opens, move to another server location and then try the original again. A ping to a website that will not resolve or loses packets points at DNS, and a reboot is the first cure. Should that fail, send the details, including your IP address, to support.
Countries and networks that block Hotspot Shield
The help centre lists states known to block VPN services: Qatar, Oman, Saudi Arabia, the UAE (mostly on Android and iOS there), Iran, China, Turkey, Pakistan, Bahrain, Russia and Egypt, with connections coming and going. Its suggestion is a second device on a different platform, since platforms use different servers or protocols. Premium lists Traffic Obfuscation for filtered networks, and that feature is the only one behind the 1.9 of 10 bypass sub-index on VPNRadarLab.
Streaming with Hotspot Shield turned on
Netflix, Disney+ and Prime Video appear in the provider's claims, but streaming platforms block VPN addresses individually, so no region is promised. Another server in the same country is worth a try, remembering that streaming is limited on the free plan.
Getting help from Hotspot Shield support
The chat bubble inside the app reaches live support, available around the clock on paid plans, and email goes through the Contact Us form. Include your platform, app version, the protocols and locations you tried, and your IP address. There is no public server status page, so chat is the quickest way to hear about outages.
Hotspot Shield connection FAQ
Is Hotspot Shield down right now?
No public status page exists. Ask the in-app chat to confirm.
Why does the free version stop working?
The daily allowance has run out; browsing resumes the next day.
Does Hotspot Shield work in China or the UAE?
Only intermittently, per the official list. Premium obfuscation and a second device give the best odds.
The fix order, briefly
Work through the checks in the order above, from your line to obfuscation, and when everything fails, the in-app chat is the direct route to support. VPNRadarLab also keeps troubleshooting guides for other services if the app itself is beyond saving.
