Hotspot Shield user reviews: praised for speed, blamed for drops and renewals

3,432 reviews of Hotspot Shield collected from Trustpilot, App Store and Google Play. Most come from App Store: 3.83 of 5 after smoothing. Reviews never change our score.

Ratings by source

Smoothed: a source’s average across all VPNs counts as 50 extra reviews, so a few five-star reviews cannot outrank thousands.

On Reddit and forums

49 Reddit and forum threads mention Hotspot Shield (we keep titles and search snippets only).

People rating Hotspot Shield are moderately happy: store averages are solid, and the complaints split in two, since mobile users blame connections that drop or fail while Trustpilot reviewers grumble about billing and cancellations. Google Play is the weakest source of the three, and the VPNRadarLab score of 3.94/10 never takes reviews into account.

Ratings platform by platform

Each source catches a different mood: store ratings come from people tapping a star while the app is open, while Trustpilot attracts those who went looking specifically to complain or to praise.

Source Sample Smoothed All-VPN avg Last 90 days Negatives / replies
App Store 2,432 3.83 3.54 4.16 (310) 657 / none answered
Google Play 800 3.53 3.90 3.31 (302) 277 / 276 answered
Trustpilot 200 3.88 3.66 3 reviews 49 / 43 answered

Smoothing gives each source's cross-VPN average the weight of 50 extra reviews so a burst of five stars cannot outweigh thousands (the mechanics are laid out in the hub on VPN user reviews and the review-based rankings). Headline platform numbers look friendlier because they count star-only taps with no text: 4.58 on the US App Store from 362,514 ratings and 4.5 on Google Play from 1.63M ratings, against 3.83 and 3.53 for written reviews. Hotspot Shield's own Trustpilot profile shows a 3.4 TrustScore from 768 reviews, and since 133 of our sample's 200 reviews date from 2023, that average describes an older version of the service. Arabic-speaking store fronts supply a large share of the sample (254 App Store reviews are in Arabic, half of the Google Play set), matching the service's Middle East presence.

Why Hotspot Shield gets one star

Keyword counts in negative reviews are approximate; one review can touch several themes.

Theme App Store Google Play Trustpilot
Connection, speed, app not working ~56% ~30% ~29%
Billing, charges, refunds, cancelling ~17% ~7% ~49%
Free-plan limits ~12% ~13% ~12%
Ads ~7% ~11% none
Support ~5% ~2% ~35%

Two causes dominate. In the stores, the app either refuses to connect or crawls. On Trustpilot, complaints centre on cancelling and on being charged.

Free Basic or Premium: who is complaining

Much of the store frustration traces back to the free tier's design: 500 MB a day, a 2 Mbps cap, a single virtual US location, one device, and ads in the mobile apps. Someone who hit the cap at an airport will rate it as broken even though nothing broke, and free Basic users are the ones without the 24/7 chat.

Premium complaints follow a predictable script. Auto-renewal is on by default, the intro price is $29 for the first year and then $95.99 a year (a 3.31x jump; the monthly plan runs $1.99 for the first month, then $12.99). Direct purchases carry a 45-day "no questions asked" money-back; store purchases route refunds through Apple or Google. Switching off Hotspot Shield auto-renewal in your account keeps features until the term ends.

What changed recently

Collected review volume has grown: 25 to 55 reviews a month in late 2025 and early 2026, over 100 monthly since April 2026 with monthly averages staying between 3.64 and 4.22, and a peak of 219 in August. October so far holds 103 at a 3.90 average. The iPhone crowd warmed up (4.16 over the last 90 days) while Android cooled (3.31). Fresh Trustpilot posts are scarce, and 7 of the 10 negative ones since October 2025 claim features the reviewers relied on (Linux and router setups) were withdrawn; that is what reviewers say, not a finding. Forum threads (49 across Reddit and communities) add no ratings: they ask whether the free version is safe, troubleshoot Windows and macOS connections, mention the 2017 CDT complaint to the FTC about user data, and trade alternatives to the bundled password-manager VPN.

What five-star reviews praise

Speed is the word that recurs on Trustpilot (roughly 34% of positive reviews mention it). Store praise is brief: it connects, it is fast, the free tier covers light use.

Where the 3.94 score comes from

The VPNRadarLab score (3.94/10, 44th of 377 VPNs) is built from published facts only. It credits platform coverage with 8.1 and the network with 6.8, the strong sides. Weaknesses sit elsewhere: bypass scores 1.9 because a stealth mode is listed but none of the anti-DPI protocols are, security 3.6, and price/terms 3.7 largely due to that renewal jump. Privacy scores 3 for the US base inside Five Eyes and the absence of a published warrant canary or transparency report, with the 2017 incident applying a penalty inside privacy and setting a red flag on the whole score.

Hotspot Shield user review FAQ

Is Hotspot Shield legit according to its users?

The reviews point at reliability and billing practices rather than legitimacy. Privacy doubts surface in the score and in the forum threads via the CDT complaint.

Why is the App Store rating higher than the written reviews?

Star-only taps inflate the platform figure (4.58 versus 3.83 for written reviews).

Does the company answer bad reviews?

On Google Play (276 of 277) and Trustpilot (43 of 49) yes. On the App Store, no replies are recorded.

Are the complaints about the free version?

Partly. Data caps and ads belong to Basic; renewal charges belong to Premium.

Hotspot Shield reviews in short

Praise for Hotspot Shield centres on speed, the complaints on dropped connections, with Android the harshest of the three sources, while the Trustpilot picture revolves around cancellations and money, and the published-facts score sits outside all of it.
