Best VPN for Firestick and Fire TV: Apps Ranked and Compared

How the top three compare

Why X-VPN beats Proton on this page

This page puts 35% on ecosystem, and X-VPN's platforms subindex of 9.0 is the highest in the top three, so it takes second place here. Under the standard scoring of the overall rating, Proton edges ahead.

Where each leader loses points

X-VPN's security subindex is 4.6 because its materials do not mention DNS leak protection, a security audit or open-source apps. Bypass drags both X-VPN (1.9) and Proton (2.4) down: one stealth mode each, none of VLESS/Reality, Trojan, Hysteria2 or Shadowsocks. Proton's privacy of 6.0 comes from mandatory email sign-up and temporary storage of connection IPs. CitadelVPN loses value points mainly over its 14-day refund window.

Fire OS or Vega OS: check your stick first

Fire OS releases sit on anything from Android 5.1 to Android 16, and older sticks stay on older versions; Amazon's Fire OS overview lists the mapping. Vega OS is Linux-based, debuted on the Fire TV Stick 4K Select per Amazon's announcement, and rejects Android APK files entirely. Another trap: the Fire TV field in VPNRadarLab's data doesn't indicate Vega support, so for a Select owner the provider's download page is the place to verify.

Getting the VPN onto the stick

Open the Amazon Appstore on the device, search for the provider, install, sign in, connect, then launch your streaming app. On Fire OS there's a fallback: allow unknown apps and sideload the Android APK with a downloader tool, though phone layouts are awkward with a remote. On a Vega stick sideloading is closed off, so the router becomes the answer: 32 of the 58 services support routers, and one there covers the stick with no app at all.

Features that matter on a streaming stick

Streaming claims, caps and devices

Unblocking claims come from the providers themselves; VPNRadarLab doesn't test them. Netflix is named by 18 of the 58, BBC iPlayer by 10, Disney+ and Prime Video by 8 each. Proton ties streaming to paid plans and highlights Netflix US, UK and FR. Six entries are Smart DNS services: they redirect DNS lookups so a catalogue shows a foreign country, but nothing is encrypted. Caps matter too, because hours of 4K quickly exhaust a limited plan.

Refunds, renewals and free options

Auto-renewal is on by default for 33 of the 58 services, and renewal prices bite: Proton VPN Plus renews at $83.88 every 12 months after the first term, roughly twice the intro rate. CitadelVPN avoids this with one-off payments and no auto-renewal. Twenty services on the list offer a free plan, 25 a trial. The separate free VPNs for Firestick list covers those in depth.

FAQ

The short version

CitadelVPN tops the Fire TV list, X-VPN follows on ecosystem weight, and Proton VPN comes third with the strongest network. Confirm which system your device runs, then choose an app offering a kill switch and WireGuard, mind the auto-renewal terms, and fall back on a router VPN if no app fits your model.
