Android VPNs That Run OpenVPN: Built-In Apps, Config Files and Free Clients

Where the top-scoring services land

X-VPN takes second place here despite an overall score (6.05) below Proton VPN's (6.12), and the reason is the weighting: platforms and apps carry 35% of the page score, where X-VPN scores 9 against Proton's 7.1. Proton's renewal roughly doubles in price, but it brings 140+ countries, open-source apps on GitHub and its own Stealth mode (WireGuard over TLS). X-VPN keeps most locations behind Premium but lists OpenVPN and WireGuard alongside its proprietary Everest protocol. CitadelVPN leads the page; its apps lean on VLESS and Hysteria2 for difficult networks, and OpenVPN configs come only with the MAX plan. OpenVPN for Android vs OpenVPN Connect

Neither needs root: both run through Android's VPNService API, and OpenVPN for Android publishes its source code on GitHub under GPL v2. OpenVPN Connect is free on Google Play, supports Always-on VPN, adds a Quick Settings tile on Android 10+, and offers an "Enforce TLS 1.3" option. It removed its compression setting and no longer supports Android 8, and it shows a warning when a profile contains directives it no longer supports. OpenVPN for Android exposes the underlying options and logs, which is what you want when a handshake fails and you need to see where.

Importing an .ovpn profile, step by step

1. Download the profile from the provider's account area and note the service credentials, which often differ from the website login.
2. In the client, choose import from file and pick the profile from storage or Google Drive. Connect's import also accepts a connection URL or a provider login.
3. Enter the username and password when asked.
4. Accept Android's VPN permission prompt and connect.
5. In Settings, Network, VPN, enable Always-on VPN and "block connections without VPN"; that works with any client and stops leaks when the tunnel drops.

Typical failures: wrong credentials (one character in the password and the connection is dead), legacy directives rejected by Connect, and UDP blocked on the network. For the last one, change the transport to TCP over port 443.

When WireGuard or stealth beats plain OpenVPN

On a phone hopping between Wi-Fi and mobile data, WireGuard reconnects faster and is easier on the battery; use OpenVPN only as a fallback. Where DPI fingerprints traffic, plain OpenVPN dies quickly on restrictive networks; an obfuscation mode or a stealth protocol survives longer, and 78 services on the page offer one. For 46 services OpenVPN remains the main tunnel because they offer no WireGuard at all.

Got a config-only provider or your own server: load the profile into OpenVPN Connect (official import guide), and switch to OpenVPN for Android once troubleshooting demands it. For daily phone use, WireGuard first, with OpenVPN TCP reserved as the fallback.
