Linux VPNs with OpenVPN: Provider Apps, NetworkManager Imports and openvpn3

The three highest-scoring services and how each gets OpenVPN onto Linux

CitadelVPN tops the page, yet its OpenVPN profiles exist only on the MAX tier, so cheaper plans leave you without them. X-VPN ships a native client but scores 4.6 on security and publishes nothing on DNS leak handling. Proton's weak point is pricing: renewal costs about twice the intro price.

Why platform coverage reorders this ranking

Ecosystem is the single largest weight on this page, 35 percent, ahead of privacy at 21.7 percent, so breadth of device support lifts X-VPN past Proton VPN despite its weaker security (4.6) and bypass (1.9) numbers. If an audited no-logs policy matters more to you, read the subindices rather than the headline order; 16 of the 125 services have passed an independent audit.

Vendor app or just an .ovpn file

For roughly one service in three, Linux support means guides, manual setup or downloadable profiles. Cryptostorm and OVPN publish .ovpn (plus WireGuard) files you wire up yourself; MoreVPN, S6N and Witopia have no app of their own, leaving you with NetworkManager or manual configs. Vendors with clients exist too: IVPN's open-source app brings a leak-blocking firewall that suits a laptop moving between Wi-Fi networks, while ChibaTunnel ships native packages for a distro where you want one.

openvpn, NetworkManager or openvpn3: which client to install

The newest option is the OpenVPN 3 Linux client, packaged for Ubuntu, Debian, RHEL and Fedora: DNS is set up automatically and unprivileged users can import and start profiles.

Connecting from the terminal and keeping the tunnel up with systemd

Start in the foreground once and confirm you see "Initialization Sequence Completed" before automating anything. Then place the config as client.conf in /etc/openvpn and, once the templated unit is enabled, it starts at every boot; the journal holds the log. One wrong character in the remote line and you'll watch a retry loop for ages. With openvpn3, import the profile persistently and enable the session unit for the same effect.

DNS and kill switch when there is no vendor app

With plain OpenVPN 2, DNS servers pushed by the server take effect only if an up/down script passes them to resolvconf or systemd-resolved. Skip that helper and lookups keep flowing to your ISP resolver. No kill switch exists either: when the tunnel drops, traffic falls back to the default route, so a firewall policy permitting only tun0 plus the VPN server's endpoint is the fix. Read "kill switch: yes" carefully; 74 services claim one, yet the claim frequently describes the Windows or mobile build. The Linux kill switch ranking filters for services that confirm one.

FAQ

Short answer for Linux users

Pick the provider first, the client second. A vendor app handles DNS and firewall for you; a profile means control but leaks stay your problem. The cheapest paid plan on this page is €0.71 a month and the median is €3.22 a month; the full Linux VPN ranking shows where apps, WireGuard and other protocols change the picture.
