WireGuard VPN Providers Ranked: Apps, Config Files and Privacy

The three services with the highest page score

Each has a snag. CitadelVPN's entry tier is PRO, but the WireGuard files live on MAX, priced at €3.78 monthly on a two-year term; the apps themselves lean on VLESS and Hysteria2. Xeovo discloses no kill switch, no leak protection, no audit, and since scoring counts only published features, its security sub-score lands at 1.1. Proton offers exactly one anti-blocking trick (Stealth), which caps its bypass score at 2.4 despite 140+ countries.

Toggle in the app or .conf file

The common path is picking WireGuard from a menu in the provider's app: it generates keys, picks servers, applies the kill switch. The alternative is a configuration file containing your private key, the server's public key, the endpoint and port, and your internal tunnel IP. You import it into the official WireGuard client, onto OpenWrt on a router, or a Linux box. Just 61 of the 192 publish such files, so check the help pages before paying whenever routing gear is the plan.

Going manual costs you features: the provider's kill switch and split tunnelling don't follow you into the official client. On Windows enable "block untunneled traffic", or set AllowedIPs to 0.0.0.0/0, ::/0 elsewhere. A file ties one key to one server, and one wrong character in the key leaves the connection dead; regenerate it in your account if it leaks.

The connecting IP WireGuard stores

A stock WireGuard server keeps in memory the address each key last used, plus every key gets a permanent tunnel address of its own. Providers patch this through dynamic address assignment, double NAT, or wiping peers after each session. Their hardware stays closed to you, yet the policies are readable: of the 192, 91 state they don't log the connecting IP, 15 admit to it, 20 keep it partially or temporarily, and 66 say nothing at all. Silence costs them points. The firmer proof is an independent no-logs audit, held by 29 of these services.

When WireGuard gets blocked

Deep packet inspection spots the WireGuard handshake pattern regardless of port, and the protocol ships with no disguise. There's no TCP mode either, since UDP is the only transport, so a network permitting just TCP 443 kills the tunnel. This is why the page gives censorship bypass 40% of the score, ahead of privacy at 21%.

That drags down famous names further down. IVPN ranks 6th with privacy at 9.0 but bypass of 2.4. NordVPN (9th) and Surfshark (13th) score 1.9 on bypass, Mullvad (17th) 2.4, because they publish few or no obfuscation options.

WireGuard VPN FAQ

Which WireGuard VPN to pay for

On networks that filter VPN traffic, CitadelVPN and Xeovo VPN let you switch to VLESS, Shadowsocks or Trojan when WireGuard is dropped, and Xeovo VPN gives you WireGuard config files without a plan upgrade. For readers outside censorship zones who value an audited policy and a large network first, Proton VPN is the match, and the free plan lets you try the protocol before committing money.
