Free WireGuard VPN: Who Gives It Away and on What Terms
WireGuard for free exists, but on the 87-service list where every provider has a free plan and WireGuard somewhere in the product, the two are checked separately. Some apps run on WireGuard only, so the free tier cannot offer anything else. A few sites distribute prebuilt configurations that work with the official client. And five services, Cloudbric VPN and Urban VPN among them, gate WireGuard behind an upgrade. Read more

Which free plans actually include WireGuard
| Group | What the free tier gives you | Who fits here |
|---|---|---|
| App built around WireGuard | the protocol by default | AtmosVPN (10 GB/mo, 10 Mbps), VPN One Click, VPNHouse |
| Config distributor | a file or account, no provider app | VPNBook, VPN Jantit, FreeVPN.us |
| WireGuard locked to paid | free plan misses the protocol | Cloudbric VPN, Urban VPN, URnetwork, Blokada |
| Client app alone | connects, supplies nothing | v2rayNG, V2Box, Karing, Rethink DNS |
The client group confuses newcomers: v2rayNG imports a configuration, it does not generate one, so you still need a server or a file from elsewhere. URnetwork's free plan is generous (30 GiB a day on 2 devices) yet its WireGuard profiles sit on Pro, and Blokada's free tier only does DNS and ad blocking. 70 of the services have enough published data for the main ranking.
The top three and how they differ
| Field | CitadelVPN | Proton VPN | X-VPN |
|---|---|---|---|
| Page / overall score | 8.37 / 8.74 | 5.89 / 6.12 | 5.87 / 6.05 |
| Jurisdiction | Panama | Switzerland | Singapore |
| Free tier | no ads, terms unpublished | unlimited data, 10 countries, 1 device | 26 regions, ad-funded, no sign-up |
| WireGuard reach | config files on MAX only | inside the apps | inside the apps |
| Paid from | €1.38/mo | €3.00/mo | €2.57/mo |
| Refund window | 14 days | 30 days | 30 days |
Proton's free servers block streaming and P2P and allow a single device; X-VPN funds its free regions through ad networks like AdMob. The page score itself weights value (refunds, free terms, cheap upgrades) at 40%, privacy at 21.2% and security at 14.1%.
What free tiers cap, in numbers
| Service | Data | Restrictions |
|---|---|---|
| PrivadoVPN | 10 GB / 30 days, then emergency servers | 13 locations, 1 device |
| Hide.me | unlimited | 8 locations, throttled speeds, 1 device |
| TunnelBear | 2 GB / month | no country choice |
| Hotspot Shield | 500 MB / day | 2 Mbps ceiling, 1 US location |
| Shellfire VPN | unlimited | 1,000 kbit/s, 2 locations |
| OkayFreedom | 500 MB / month, no account | Windows client, WireGuard-based |
Half a gigabyte a day means chat and navigation, not video. Ads are confirmed in 36 of the 87 services, 9 state they have none, and 42 do not say. How the rest pay: Urban VPN sells browsing-data insights, Super Free VPN rents out your idle bandwidth, many mobile apps embed ad SDKs.
Free config files for the official WireGuard client
A config site replaces the provider's app with a plain file that the official WireGuard client imports on Android, iOS, Windows or a router. The cost is upkeep: VPNBook rotates credentials and its files expire after 7 days, one device per file. VPN Jantit accounts live 7 days (2 per user), FreeVPN.us accounts die after 2 days, and VPNServerHub gives 25 GB plus 1 GB per watched ad. If the tunnel hangs at the handshake, the network is swallowing that UDP port; regenerate on 443. On top of that, VPNBook hands out a shared username and password that it rotates regularly, so many strangers sit behind the same login. What you lose versus a provider app (kill switch, split tunnelling) is covered in the WireGuard provider ranking.
Self-hosting as the truly free route
WireGuard's software is free and open source with official builds for every major platform. The real expense is a machine you control: a router at home that has a public IP, or a rented VPS. You trade shared credentials for one exit IP and your own maintenance, and the official quick start takes two key pairs plus a brief config to get the tunnel up. Cloudflare WARP is a middle path: free, no ads, WireGuard selectable (MASQUE is default), but the nearest Cloudflare data center decides your location.
FAQ
Is WireGuard itself free?
Yes, protocol and official apps are open source; providers charge for servers, not the protocol.
Is a free config safe to use?
The encryption matches any paid setup; the operator and the shared account are the weak points.
Does WARP use WireGuard?
Optionally. MASQUE is the default transport.
Can a free config go on a router?
On a router whose firmware supports WireGuard, import the file directly.
The short answer
A free plan and WireGuard support are two separate checkmarks across the 87 services. Only the WireGuard-based apps and config distributors put the protocol on the free tier reliably; five services, Cloudbric VPN and Blokada among them, reserve it for paying users. The page score puts CitadelVPN first at 8.37, then Proton VPN at 5.89 and X-VPN at 5.87. Cheapest paid plans run from €0.71 to a €2.58 median monthly. For free VPNs on any protocol, the free VPN ranking has the fuller list.
