Free VPN with a Free Trial: Test Premium, Keep the Free Plan

Free plan plus trial: what each part gives you

Think of the free tier as the floor that stays yours. During the trial you move up to the paid network for a fixed window: every location, faster servers, more devices. Two things decide how useful that window is: the billing model behind the trial, and what waits on the other side.

Trial lengths and card requirements

Thirty minutes on a clock is enough to confirm the app connects, nothing more. Thirty days, the longest option here, leaves room to properly test streaming and speed, though Avira requires a payment method on file before it starts.

The top three compared

Facts the table doesn't show: CitadelVPN signs you up without an email and opens the trial from the website account. DuneVPN ships nothing but an Android client so far, and its yearly plan reads "7 days free, then $11.99". LightningX runs 2000+ servers across 70+ countries and allows 3 devices by default.

How the page score works

Value, meaning price and terms, carries 40% of the score here, privacy 21.2%, security 14.1%, censorship bypass 10.6%. That weighting lifts services with cheap plans, fair refunds and card-free trials. Each row also shows the overall score, which uses the standard weights, so the two numbers usually differ. Independent audits of no-logs claims exist for just 5 of the 77.

When the trial ends: free tier or a charge

A trial launched inside the App Store or Google Play behaves like a subscription whose first period costs nothing. Forget to cancel and the store bills you; Urban VPN and Presto VPN require cancelling a full 24 hours before the trial runs out. Cancel from the store itself: Apple's subscription page and Google Play's settings cover the steps. Money paid through a store is refunded by that store too, so a provider's money-back guarantee may not reach you.

Card-free trials spare you that cancellation dance entirely, whether they run in the app or on the site. Symlex VPN hands out a five-day trial across all its apps without any card, and when it ends the account simply falls back to the free plan. One-off payments take the risk out entirely, since nothing is charged when the period ends. Repeat trials are usually blocked, one per account or Apple ID.

Testing the paid tier properly

Spend the trial on what the free plan blocks: compare paid-server speed against free ones, load the streaming service you pay for, drop Wi-Fi mid-download and check whether the kill switch stops traffic, run a DNS leak test, and connect an extra device where the trial permits.

Free VPN with a trial vs trial-only services

A trial-only brand locks you out on day one after the trial. Here the paid plans start at €0.36 a month (median €2.57) and the free tier keeps running. The full VPNRadarLab trial list covers 190 services, including those without any free plan.
