The top three and how their free plans differ
| CitadelVPN | X-VPN | Proton VPN | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Page / overall score | 8.43 / 8.74 | 6.89 / 6.05 | 6.40 / 6.12 |
| Registered in | Panama | Singapore | Switzerland |
| Free offer | ad-free plan + 5-day 5 GB trial | Basic, no sign-up, 26 regions | unlimited data, 1 device |
| Ads in the free app | no | yes | no |
| No-logs audit | yes | ISAE 3000 attestation, auditor unnamed | yes |
| Google Play | 4.4, 10+ installs | 4.5, 50M+ installs | 4.7, 100M+ installs |
| Cheapest paid plan | €1.38/mo, 14-day refund | €2.57/mo, 30-day refund | €3.00/mo, 30-day refund |
Each one bills you differently. X-VPN drops the account requirement and recovers costs through advertising: the free build carries SDKs from AdMob, InMobi, Chartboost and Liftoff. Proton wants your email, then switches the data meter off, but one device, medium speed and countries it picks for you, with streaming, P2P and NetShield locked to paid. CitadelVPN keeps its free plan clean of ads and adds a card-free trial of the paid network.
What other free Android plans cut
| Service | Free data | Speed | Locations | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hide.me | unlimited | restricted | 8 | 1 device |
| PrivadoVPN | 10 GB per 30 days | not stated | 13 | 1 device |
| ZoogVPN | 10 GB a month | limited | 5 | AdMob ads in the app |
| FreeVPN.com | 1 GB a day | not stated | 3 | 1 device |
| Hotspot Shield | 500 MB a day | up to 2 Mbps | 1 virtual US location | watching ads adds data |
| Canada VPN | not stated | not stated | 6 servers, 5 countries | ads plus a connection time limit |
Daily caps vanish fast on a phone. Leave Play Store auto-updates running while connected through the tunnel and a 1 GB allowance is gone before you finish coffee.
Who actually pays for your free VPN
Big consumer brands are the minority here: 128 of the 225 services are single-purpose free mobile apps, little more than a connect button next to an ad slot. Their policies are blunt once you read them: 134 collect device information, 115 feed app analytics, 79 log crash reports, and 38 (plus 27 partly) keep your connection IP, which undoes half the point of a tunnel. 82 services never say whether the free app shows ads, and 140 stay silent on an independent no-logs audit. Registrations include the USA (30), Hong Kong (14), Singapore (12), India (9), the UK (9) and China (8), so local data-access rules reach some operators. On sign-up, 38 services want an email, 106 let you skip it, and 26 publish their apps as open source.
Checking the listing before you install
- Match the developer name on Google Play to the VPN company's site. Lookalike apps copy icons and near-identical titles of known brands.
- In Google Play, tap "Data safety" and then "See details", then read "Data shared". The developer fills this in themselves; no auditor checks it, so treat it as the minimum.
- Refuse anything requesting contacts, SMS or location: a tunnel only needs network access.
- Ignore install counts as a trust signal. 50M+ downloads say nothing about logging.
- Enable the kill switch if the app has one (73 confirm it, 5 partly, 127 are silent): when the tunnel drops, it stops traffic leaking over mobile data.
- If you sideload an APK, use the provider's own website and nowhere else. "No registration" also means no account to recover.
Why X-VPN ranks above Proton on this page but not overall
Ecosystem carries 35% of the page score, privacy 21.7%, then security at 14.4%, with value and bypassing blocks worth 10.8% each, network 7.2%. X-VPN's platform coverage props up its ecosystem block, which is why it sits second here while Proton edges past it on standard overall weights.
Free plan, trial or a cheap paid plan
Free tiers handle basic browsing and messaging over public Wi-Fi. To test what a paid network actually does, a trial is the quicker route; the Android VPNs with a free trial page gathers them, and a trial ends, unlike a plan. If banners wear you down, the free Android VPNs without ads page filters for that. For streaming or torrenting, paying is the honest answer: upgrades on this page cost €0.36 a month at minimum, median €2.57.
FAQ
Is there a free Android VPN with no limits at all?
No. Proton removes the data cap, then compensates with one device, medium speed and 10 pre-chosen countries.
Can I connect without creating an account?
Yes. X-VPN Basic skips registration; CitadelVPN skips the email too.
Is it safe to install a free VPN APK?
Only from the provider's own site. Third-party APK mirrors are where malware hides.
Will a free plan unblock Netflix?
Rarely. Proton reserves streaming for paid subscribers.
The short version
All three audited options are on an equal footing: CitadelVPN offers an ad-free free plan plus a card-free 5-day trial, Proton VPN gives unlimited data on one device, and X-VPN needs no sign-up but shows ads. Verify the developer name and the Data safety section on Google Play first. When the caps pinch, paid plans run from €0.36 a month.
