Free VPN for Firefox: Add-ons Compared by Data Caps, Ads and Logging
Proton VPN is the free Firefox add-on worth installing first: unlimited data, no ads and an independently audited no-logs policy, limited to one device and a short list of exits. Hide.me is the other unlimited option. Of the 25 services on the page, only 4 have a no-logs audit, and several "free VPNs" turn out to be proxies or blockers once you read the terms. Read more

What the free plans give inside Firefox
| Service | Free data | Locations | Devices | Ads |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Proton VPN | unlimited | 10 random countries | 1 | none |
| Hide.me | unlimited | 8 | 1 | not stated |
| ZoogVPN | 10 GB / month | 5 | 1 | in Android app |
| PrivadoVPN | 10 GB / 30 days | 13 | 1 | not stated |
| Betternet | unlimited (claimed) | 5 | 5 | yes |
| StelsVPN | 300 MB / day | not stated | not stated | not stated |
Betternet claims unlimited data on five devices, but Proton VPN and Hide.me pay for their unlimited data with lower speed, fewer countries and a single device each. StelsVPN's daily 300 MB dies after a short video session; it covers mail and maps. Windscribe publishes no free allowance at all, Canada VPN limits you to six servers in five countries (US, UK, NL, DE, FR) with ads and a connection-time limit, and BelkaVPN keeps you on US and Canada exits. Across the page, 7 services promise unlimited free data, 4 state a cap, and 13 say nothing.

Ecosystem weighs 35% on this page, which is why ZoogVPN sits second despite a lower overall score than LightningX VPN: its ecosystem subindex is 9.0 against 7.1 for the other two. Zoog's free tier runs 128-bit encryption (256-bit on Premium), streams only partially, shows Google AdMob ads in its Android app, and refunds you within a week. LightningX supports WireGuard, VLESS and Shadowsocks, protocols built for restricted networks, but publishes no free data cap and has no audit on record. Proton's price roughly doubles at renewal, and streaming, P2P and NetShield are paid-only.
Free "VPN" add-ons that are something else
Some entries never build a tunnel. CactusVPN's free option is Smart DNS: it shifts the region some websites see, with no encryption involved. Disconnect's free extension stops trackers and does not tunnel traffic. Bright VPN's add-on merely acts as a remote switch for its desktop program. At least eight entries work as proxies (Windscribe, Hide.me, Mudfish, Urban VPN, OneVPN, CloudVPN Pro, VPNmine, 1VPN): Firefox gets a different IP, while the mail client, game launcher and OS updates keep the home one. MASQ Network is a decentralised dVPN where node operators earn a token.
Free add-ons that cost you your IP, bandwidth or browsing data
Red flags mark three services. Super Free VPN and Bright VPN store the connection IP address, the very thing a VPN should hide. The business models explain why free can be free: Super Free VPN rents out a slice of your idle bandwidth as business traffic, Bright VPN gives Bright Data customers access to your connection when it sits unused. Urban VPN's parent monetises browsing-derived marketing insights, and in December 2025 its Urban VPN Proxy extension was reported harvesting users' AI chatbot conversations. Touch VPN's free tier runs ad SDKs (Unity Ads, ironSource, Kochava, Google). The free VPNs without ads list ranks free tiers that show no ads.
Checking an add-on on addons.mozilla.org and on Android
Install via the vendor's link, then match the publisher on the AMO listing. Mozilla's Recommended badge means staff reviewed the extension's security before listing it and keep checking it afterwards; the badge can be revoked, so verify who holds it now. Firefox for Android installs add-ons from AMO, so check whether the listing is marked as available for Android, and remember that a one-device free plan counts the phone as that device. Firefox's own browser-only VPN (50 GB a month) is compared with the paid add-ons in the full Firefox extensions ranking.
FAQ
Is there a free Firefox VPN without registration?
Betternet, OneVPN and 1VPN say their free tier needs no account. Proton VPN asks for an email address.
Which free add-on has no data limit?
Proton VPN and Hide.me, capped by speed and one device rather than by data.
When is the paid plan the better deal?
When you stream or download torrents: Proton reserves both for paid users. Paid plans of these same services start at €0.95 a month (PrivadoVPN), median €3.00, and Proton gives you 30 days to change your mind.
Short answer
Of the 25 free Firefox add-ons, 4 hold an independent no-logs audit and 3 have red flags. Pick Proton VPN for unlimited data with no ads, Hide.me as the second unlimited tier, ZoogVPN if 10 GB a month and wide ecosystem coverage suffice. Leave Super Free VPN, Bright VPN and Urban VPN alone: they keep your connection IP, put your idle bandwidth to work for other companies, or sell insights drawn from your browsing.
