Best Free VPN for Chromebook: Free Plans, Data Caps and Trade-offs Compared

Ten services here ship a free plan alongside a ChromeOS client, and audits back the no-logs claims of three of them. CitadelVPN tops the list at 8.43, ahead of X-VPN at 6.89 and Proton VPN at 6.40. Each free tier pays for itself somehow: ad SDKs, a single device or a short country list. Pick the limit that annoys you least. Read more

X-VPN drops the account requirement and monetises through four ad SDKs: AdMob, InMobi, Chartboost and Liftoff. Proton removes the data meter but allows a single device at medium speed in countries chosen for you; streaming, P2P and NetShield remain behind the paywall. CitadelVPN's free tier runs ad-free and comes with a five-day trial (5 GB, two devices, once per account, no card), while its extension is still being built.

Fifty megabytes disappears within one video, which makes VuzeVPN's tier suitable for a captive portal at best. Among the ten, CitadelVPN and Proton alone state plainly that no advertising appears in their free versions.

Who funds the bottom half, and why store ratings mislead

GLOBEX VPN and the mobile-first apps from Secure Signal Inc. (Thunder VPN, Secure VPN) target phones primarily, and URnetwork sends traffic over community nodes. The policies reveal the business model: Secure Signal logs connection timestamps, device type, OS, carrier and the Google Advertising ID while running Firebase analytics; GLOBEX retains connection metadata plus an anonymous device ID; Canada VPN's Lite policy records usage timing, device IDs and ISP. Even a 4.6 rating from 2.42 million Play reviewers left Secure Signal last at 1.48, where its security subindex sits at zero.

Getting a free VPN running on ChromeOS

Start with the Android app from the Play Store: it registers as a network connection, so browser tabs and Android apps move through the same tunnel. Enable always-on there so the tunnel reconnects. When the tunnel drops, a kill switch blocks leaks, and Secure Signal Inc. ships without one. GLOBEX gets onto Chromebooks solely through its Chrome extension, which covers browser tabs alone. Seven providers also ship Linux apps. The built-in client (Settings > Network > Add connection) accepts IKEv2, L2TP/IPsec and basic OpenVPN but demands config files, which just 2 of the 10 publish; at CitadelVPN the WireGuard and OpenVPN files sit behind its paid MAX plan. Google's help page lists the fields.

Why this page ranks them this way

The page score weighs ecosystem at 35%, privacy at 21.7%, security at 14.4%, value and bypass at 10.8% apiece, network at 7.2%. That platform weight pushes X-VPN (9.0 for platforms) above Proton and raises ZoogVPN to fourth here against an overall of 4.36. Five of the ten, Canada VPN, URnetwork, VuzeVPN, GLOBEX VPN and Secure Signal Inc., sit at zero for bypass because none publishes a stealth mode or obfuscated servers, leaving nothing to fall back on when a network blocks VPN traffic.

When a trial or a cheap plan beats free

CitadelVPN's trial lasts five days card-free, BelkaVPN's seven with no upfront payment claimed, URnetwork's fourteen days of UR Pro, and GLOBEX's seven via a Google Play trial that requires a card. Paid plans start at €1.38 monthly, median €2.57. X-VPN and Proton auto-renew by default; CitadelVPN sells one-off payments with a 14-day money-back window.

FAQ

A free Chromebook VPN without limits?

Proton, GLOBEX and Secure Signal drop the data cap, each trading it for a device limit, ads or reduced speed.

On a school Chromebook?

Only if the administrator permits Play Store or extension installs; managed devices often hide both.

A free VPN with no download?

The built-in ChromeOS client needs no app, only manual config files, published by just two services here.

Does a free plan stream Netflix?

Proton's free tier excludes streaming outright, and VuzeVPN's 50 MB a day dries up long before a film ends.
