Best Affordable VPNs Under €5 a Month: What a Few Extra Euros Buy

What counts as "affordable" here

A service qualifies when its cheapest published paid plan sits above €0 and under €5 a month after conversion to euros, usually calculated on the longest term. Free-only apps are out. Of the 280 listed, 256 publish enough data for the full ranking. The field splits into three bands: 68 services under €2 (median €1.44), 99 between €2 and €3 (median €2.57), and 113 between €3 and €5 (median €3.75). That top band holds 76 consumer VPNs plus 9 of the page's 15 VPNs that come inside a security suite.

The three highest-scoring VPNs under €5

All three avoid intelligence alliances, yet each carries a catch. CitadelVPN's entry tier caps traffic at 50 GB a month. Proton VPN runs 20,000+ servers in 140+ countries, but the billing works like this: the first 24 months cost $83.76, after that $83.88 is billed every 12 months, so the yearly cost roughly doubles. Its bypass sub-score is a weak 2.4, and sign-up wants an email. X-VPN renews "at the then-current price" without naming it, which hides the cost of term two.

What €3–5 adds over €1–2, and what it doesn't

Judge the columns by share, not count. Refunds improve with price: roughly 77% of providers above €3 offer them, against about six in ten under €2. Audits move the opposite way. A kill switch remains a coin toss in every band. The top band also contains no service confirming auto-renewal is off by default. VPNRadarLab keeps a list of VPNs with a money-back guarantee for testing plans this way.

Known names above €3 and their fine print

Proton VPN (2nd): €3.00 on Plus, then the yearly cost roughly doubles as described above; one refund per user, cash and bank transfer excluded. NordVPN (14th): €3.00 entry, Basic renews at $139.08 a year, independently verified no-logs, 10 devices. NymVPN (17th): €3.44, decentralised, no outside audit yet, pro-rata refunds. CactusVPN (26th): €3.41 with the renewal rate locked while the subscription stays active; Securitum audit with a public report. Malwarebytes Privacy VPN (50th): €3.33, part of a security suite, 60-day refund, 2026 audit. LightningX VPN (7th): €4.30, apps for Windows, macOS, iOS and Android, no-logs audit and auto-renewal terms unstated, 30-day refund.

How the ranking treats a higher price

Price and terms carry 40% of the page score, privacy 21%, security 14%, censorship bypass 11%. Inside the price block, a cheaper service still earns more points, so a €4 VPN has to outscore cheaper rivals on audits, jurisdiction and billing honesty. That is why only two of the top ten cost €3 or more (Proton VPN 2nd at €3.00, LightningX 7th at €4.30), and just four of the top twenty.

FAQ

Quick verdict for a €5 budget

Treat the extra euros as refund insurance, not as a privacy upgrade. Compare the total cost over two to three years with the VPNRadarLab cost calculator. Lock in a published renewal rate and test the connection on your own network before the refund window closes. If €5 is still too much, the sub-€3 list narrows the field to the 167 services priced under €3 a month.
