Best VPN for Travel Abroad: Home IPs, Banking Apps and Blocked Countries
A VPN abroad earns its place for two reasons: giving your bank, streaming account and government portals an IP address they know, and getting through networks that filter VPN traffic. Encryption already guards what you type on hotel and café Wi-Fi (the FTC's advice on public Wi-Fi says most websites now encrypt, so ordinary browsing is usually safe), yet it changes nothing about the country a site sees. Hence the entry rule on this page: servers in 50+ countries, a stealth mode and a phone app. Read more

The three highest-scoring travel VPNs
| Service | Page score | Network | Countries | Devices | Cheapest plan | Refund |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Proton VPN | 6.98 | 8.7 | 140+ | 10 | $3.49/mo, 2 years | 30 days |
| X-VPN | 6.44 | 7.2 | 80+ | 5 | $2.99/mo, 2 years | 30 days |
| PureVPN | 6.05 | 7.6 | 65+ | 10 | $2.15/mo, 27 months | 31 days |
All three lead on the map and trail on censorship: each publishes a stealth mode, but none ships VLESS Reality, Trojan, Hysteria2 or Shadowsocks, which is why their bypass sub-scores sit at 2.4, 1.9 and 1.9. Only 15 of the 57 services here have had a no-logs claim checked independently; 25 say nothing at all.
Why banks and home apps lock you out abroad
To a bank, a login from an unfamiliar country reads as fraud, and streaming accounts quietly switch you to the local catalogue. A server back home hands you a familiar address, which fixes most of it. The catch: shared VPN exits sit in data-centre ranges, and some banks and streaming services distrust that range even when the location matches. A dedicated IP (11 services on this page), a static IP (10) or a residential IP that resembles a home broadband line (8) lowers that risk, though no address type is guaranteed to pass. If every route fails, mobile data on your own roaming SIM often gets through, since sites see your home carrier's network.
Server map: what 50+ countries buys you
The number of countries decides whether there is an exit near you for speed and one at home for access. A long stay or a multi-country route needs a broad map; a week in one city needs exactly two locations. Middle East coverage matters for Gulf stopovers, and 26 of the 57 services list such locations.
Countries that block VPNs: stealth mode in brief
A stealth mode disguises the tunnel as ordinary HTTPS traffic, which lowers the chance a filter singles you out, with no guarantee. TorGuard has the highest bypass sub-score on this page (5.7), yet it ranks seventh overall at 5.54; it also offers a residential IP. Install the app and sign in before departure, because provider sites and app stores can be hard to reach from inside a filtered network, and check your destination's entry and local rules first (UK travellers can start with the government's foreign travel advice).
One subscription for phone, laptop and tablet
X-VPN's terms count only 3 devices per platform toward its five, worth knowing before you share an account.
| Feature | Why it matters on the road | Of 57 services |
|---|---|---|
| Kill switch | stops banking and email apps leaking onto hotel Wi-Fi when the tunnel drops | 45 |
| Split tunnelling | keeps maps and ride apps on the local connection while banking goes home | 33 |
| Dedicated IP | your bank sees one address every session | 11 |
Free plans, trials and eSIM bundles for a short trip
Thirty of the 57 services have a free tier; fine for a weekend, cramped for a month because locations and devices are capped (Proton VPN's free plan has no data limit but works on one device in ten randomly chosen countries). For a single trip, treat the refund window as the trial and cancel before auto-renewal. eSIM data inside the subscription is rare: only 3 of 57 offer it, PureVPN's being 3 GB for 30 days on the Max plan.
Moving abroad rather than visiting
Relocation is a paperwork question, not a routing one. Tell your bank about the new address and check how the move affects your accounts and tax filing; a home IP keeps apps usable but convinces no tax office. Our guide to bank, tax and government sites from abroad covers what to change.
Travel VPN FAQ
Do I need a VPN when travelling?
Only when a home service verifies where you are or the destination filters the internet. For plain browsing, the padlock or HTTPS in the address bar already covers the session.
Will my bank block me if I use a VPN abroad?
It can ask for extra verification. Keep to a single home server and leave your own SIM receiving messages.
Can I use a free VPN for travel?
For a short trip, sometimes. On a long stay the caps on locations and devices bite.
Should the VPN stay on all the time on my phone abroad?
Keep it on for banking and work, and use split tunnelling so that maps and ride apps stay off the tunnel and see where you actually are.
Quick pick for your trip
Proton VPN for the largest map (140+ countries) and a solid free fallback. PureVPN for the lowest long-term price among the top three ($2.15 a month) plus paid dedicated and residential IPs and an eSIM on the Max plan. X-VPN for a broad map at a cheap 2-year rate. TorGuard if your route crosses heavily filtered networks.
