Mullvad refund policy: which payments qualify within 14 days

Mullvad gives your money back within 14 days of payment, but only if you paid by card, PayPal, Google Play, Swish or SEPA wire. The request goes by email to support with your account number plus a payment reference, and cash or crypto is never refunded. The clock starts the moment you pay, not when you first connect.

Which Mullvad payments can be refunded

The payment method decides whether Mullvad can refund at all, so check the table before topping up.

Why are cash and coins excluded? Anti-money laundering rules forbid returning cash to an anonymous sender. Monero never came with a refund option at all, and Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash lost theirs on 1 January 2023, when Mullvad stopped tying accounts to blockchain records. Crypto instead earns a 10% discount; that discount is what you accept instead of the safety net.

The refund email when your account is only a number

Mullvad signs you up with an account number alone: no email, no phone, no identity check. What connects you to the money is that number plus a reference taken from the transaction. One email to support@mullvadvpn.net containing both is enough, and the reference must be copied exactly, since a single wrong character makes support match someone else's payment. Bank wire: SEPA only, back to the same account

A wire refund returns over SEPA to the account that sent it. If your bank sits outside the SEPA zone, the transfer cannot be sent back that way.

Why the window is 14 days and when the clock starts

Until January 2025 the guarantee covered 30 days. Mullvad halved it for new payments, citing shorter retention of payment data: payment IDs stay on file for 20 days, support emails for 70. Once the payment record is gone, a request has nothing to match against. Counting from the payment date matters: wait a week before installing the app and half your window is already spent.

No trial, no renewal, one flat price

Mullvad sells one plan at a flat €5 a month including VAT, and a year costs €60 at the same monthly rate, so topping up for longer only increases the sum you might need to claw back. Nothing renews automatically: you add prepaid time, it runs out, no charge appears that you would ever dispute. With no free plan and no trial, the 14 days are the only way to test the service with money at risk, so buy one month with PayPal or a card and hold on to the bank token. The guarantee ends there. The terms let support refund remaining time after a complaint under some conditions, but those conditions are not published.

Does Mullvad refund Monero or Bitcoin?

No. All three coins are non-refundable, and have been for Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash since the start of 2023.

I paid in the App Store, who refunds me?

Apple handles App Store purchases directly; Mullvad has no access to that payment.

Can a voucher be refunded?

Only by the store or reseller that sold it; Mullvad keeps no payment records for voucher sales.
