USA VPN: US Servers, American IPs and the Sites That Still Block Them

The three highest-scoring providers with US servers

The weak spot of each of the three

All three support WireGuard and OpenVPN and have audited their logging claims, so the choice comes down to flaws. Surfshark keeps your connection IP and timestamps for up to 15 minutes after each session and answers to a Nine Eyes country, which drags its privacy sub-index to 4.4. FastestVPN still lists PPTP and L2TP, publishes no stealth mode and records the day and length of each connection; its security sub-index of 2.5 reflects how little it discloses, with no security audit, RAM-only servers or DNS leak protection on record. CitadelVPN's terms are tight differently: a two-week refund window and no PayPal.

Why an American IP still gets refused

Streaming platforms and banks check more than the country on your address. They subscribe to databases of hosting-owned ranges, and an exit shared by hundreds of subscribers stands out immediately. Netflix's help centre warns that a VPN can bring up its E106 proxy error, and it does not support VPN viewing for live events or on the ad-supported plan.

A personal address softens this. Dedicated IPs are sold by 33 of the 178 providers, static server IPs by 24, and residential IPs, which pass for home broadband, by only 11.

Why some US news sites are blocked in Europe (GDPR, error 451)

On 25 May 2018, the day the GDPR took effect, sites of the Tronc group (Chicago Tribune, LA Times, New York Daily News and others) and of Lee Enterprises, publisher of 46 dailies across 21 states, went dark for most of Europe, as BBC News reported. Reuters Institute research from 2022 read this as a deliberate trade: a small EU audience was not worth rebuilding the tracking stack, and USA Today offered Europeans a stripped-down compliant version instead. The LA Times later reopened; others from the hundreds that blocked were still closed when the study was written. While the blocks lasted, the sites in that study lost 82% to 96% of their monthly UK visitors.

The status code behind these pages, HTTP 451 "Unavailable For Legal Reasons", entered the standard as RFC 7725 in February 2016, its number a nod to Bradbury's novel about book burning. In 2021 the GDELT Project's crawlers received it from around 560 news outlets, mostly small local US papers, and only when the request came from an EU data centre. Many of those papers run on shared hosting platforms, so one setting closes all of them at once. Britain kept the GDPR after Brexit, so British readers report the same screens. The block is the publisher's own policy, not an EU ban and not a fault in your setup.

Servers in the USA versus a company in the USA

Where your exit sits and where the provider is incorporated are two different things. Of the 178, exactly 39 are registered in the USA, a Five Eyes country; 65 do not state a jurisdiction at all. Two of the top five, TorGuard (page score 5.54) and LunoVPN (5.04), are themselves American companies, and the separate VPNRadarLab page of US-registered providers ranks that segment on its own terms.

The 178 services in numbers

The page score weighs the network heaviest at 40%, then privacy 20%, security 13%, price and terms 10%, censorship bypass 10%, apps and support 7%.

Free plans and browser extensions with a US location

80 of the 178 offer a free tier, and 35 of those confirm they show ads. A browser extension, published by 37 providers, tunnels only the browser: your mail client and banking app on the same machine still show your real location. The free US VPN list sorts these options separately from paid ones.

FAQ

Which US VPN to pick

CitadelVPN leads on score and lets you test with 5 GB and no card for five days. Surfshark has the largest map of the three and a month to change your mind, if the 15-minute retention logs do not bother you. FastestVPN costs the least of the three; read its logging policy first. Whichever you choose, open the exact American site you need while the refund window is still open.
