India VPN: Providers With Servers and IP Addresses in India

Virtual Indian IP or physical server in India: why 91 of 94 won't say

CERT-In's directions from 28 April 2022 force any provider with hardware in India to keep subscriber names, IP addresses, email, contact details, usage periods and purpose of use for five years, as the Internet Society brief on the 2022 directions explains. A no-logs promise and that retention rule cannot share one rack, so several large brands moved their Indian machines abroad and now announce Indian IPs from countries like Singapore and the UK. That is a virtual location: the address geolocates to India, the hardware does not stand there.

Disclosure is the uncomfortable part. Only 3 of the 94 state which type they run (one virtual, two physical), 91 stay silent, and just 26 publish a city count. Only 5 claim to own rather than rent servers. Until a provider confirms otherwise in writing, assume the India entry is virtual. For streaming that hardly matters; for anything privacy-sensitive, foreign hardware is arguably better, since the retention rule never touches it.

The three highest-scoring providers with an India location

Where each of the three loses points

All three pass a no-logs audit and ship a kill switch; the differences live elsewhere. Surfshark's privacy mark of 4.4 comes from a short log of your IP and session times kept for fifteen minutes after disconnect, an email demanded at sign-up and Dutch jurisdiction. FastestVPN's 2.5 on security reflects documentation that ends at WireGuard and a kill switch, with zero obfuscation mode, plus logs of connection day and duration. CitadelVPN's trade-off is time: 14 days to refund instead of 30, though the one-off payment rules out auto-renewal surprises.

Why network size decides this ranking

The page score weights the network at 40%, privacy 20%, security 13%, price and terms 10%, bypass 10%, apps and support 7%. A reader abroad needs a clean Indian exit, so anti-DPI features earn their small 10% here. Surfshark and FastestVPN owe their places largely to network sub-index scores of 7.2 and 7.6, which offset weak privacy and security marks, while CitadelVPN leads on every sub-index except apps and support, where Surfshark and FastestVPN both score 9 against its 7.6.

Free India VPN apps and their hidden price

46 of the 94 give away a free tier, and 21 of those confirm ads inside. Most are small mobile apps with thin policies and no audit: fine for a cricket score, wrong for a UPI login. The free options get their own ranking in the free VPNs with servers in India list.

Making the Indian IP work from abroad

Pick India, run an IP lookup, and confirm it geolocates to India, not Singapore. Streaming apps cache the last region they saw, so clear the app's data first. Banking and UPI apps often also verify the registered Indian SIM; an IP alone won't get you in if the code goes to a number you no longer hold. BGMI players chasing Indian servers should test latency, because distance from the real host country shows up in ping. Do every check inside the refund window, the only real test period you get.

FAQ

Which India VPN to pick

CitadelVPN wins on privacy and security, and its trial needs no card. Surfshark offers the widest network and 30 days to test, but logs your IP briefly under Dutch law. Of the three, FastestVPN costs least yet publishes the least about its security. Verify where that Indian IP truly originates before the refund clock runs out.
