Best Mobile VPN Apps: App-Store VPNs Ranked and Vetted

The top three, field by field

Where each leader loses points

LightningX loses marks on the biggest block. Privacy and security carry 30% and 20% of the weight, and the app fails on both fronts: no independent no-logs audit, no security audit, open-source status not confirmed either way, plus a 5 Eyes jurisdiction that strips alliance points. VMP's audit claim earns credit, though nobody is named, and its bypass score of 1.9 is the real warning: one stealth mode, and none of VLESS, Trojan, Hysteria2 or Shadowsocks. FinchVPN sells prepaid blocks with no renewal ever; there is no free tier or trial, and when the data was gathered its privacy policy link was a placeholder pointing nowhere.

What sits behind a typical store VPN

The developer name on a listing often hides the actual owner. One Singapore entity, SECUREGUARD GROUP PTE. LTD., publishes three separate apps on this page alone. Among apps that state a home country, the US leads with 27, then Singapore (14) and Hong Kong (13). The free tier is nearly universal, 159 of 178, and it is paid for by ads (in 104 apps) and analytics: 115 policies admit collecting device information, 104 app analytics. Signing up without an email is common (74 apps allow anonymous registration), but a third-party audit is so rare that only 6 of 178 have one.

Reading a listing before you install

• Find the legal entity and address in the privacy policy. If neither is named, nobody answers for your traffic.
• Check the Android Data safety section, remembering the developer fills it in and Google verifies nothing about it (Google Play help).
• Look for the Verified badge, which Google reserves for VPN apps: it needs a MASA Level 2 security assessment, at least 90 days on Play, 10,000+ installs, 250+ reviews and an organisation account.
• Open the policy link. Placeholder links that lead nowhere, like FinchVPN's, are a red flag on their own.

Phone features: how many actually confirm them

Unstated means unknown, and the scoring treats it as a miss.

Weekly plans, billing and refunds

Keep VMP's $8.99 weekly tier running for a month and you pay roughly €30.93, about six times its annual rate. Buy through an app store and the refund goes to Apple or Google, not the VPN company; VMP refunds only the first purchase and routes store-bought plans through the platform anyway. Deleting the app cancels nothing. FinchVPN has no renewal to cancel, its payments are one-time.

Android or iPhone

Coverage skews Android: 137 of these apps ship on Play versus 108 on iOS, with fewer on macOS and Windows. Setup steps and system settings like Always-on VPN live on the separate pages for Android and iPhone.

FAQ

Short answer

Pick from the top of the ranking, then vet the listing yourself: named legal entity, a policy that actually loads, an audit with a named auditor, a kill switch you can enable. Choose yearly or prepaid billing over weekly, cancel subscriptions in the store's subscription screen, and treat the Data safety label and star ratings as marketing until proven otherwise.
