Self-Hosted VPN Software: Servers, Web Panels, Mesh Networks and Clients
A self-hosted VPN means the software is free and the server is yours: 74 of the 75 tools on this page have a free version, and what you actually pay for is a VPS (DigitalOcean's own entry price is $4 a month including 500 GiB outbound) or a spare box at home. We list these projects but do not score them; each entry shows "not scored", because the result depends on your setup, not on the vendor. Read more

Five kinds of software behind one label
"Self-hosted VPN" bundles very different things, and choosing the wrong category can cost you a whole evening of fiddling.
| Kind | Examples | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Installer script | Algo VPN, PiVPN, Outline | A working server built from a clean Linux box |
| Docker image | wg-easy, Wirehole, Dockovpn | Server plus admin page in a container |
| Xray / sing-box panel | 3X-UI, Marzban, Hiddify Manager | Users, traffic limits, subscription links, REALITY |
| Mesh controller | Headscale, NetBird, Nebula | Your own devices linked to each other |
| Client only | L×Box, NekoBox for Android, XiVPN | Connects to a server you already run |
Forty-one of the entries ship a web or management panel, 69 publish their source code, and only one (Hoppy Network, a paid static-IP tunnel) has no free version.
Matching the tool to the job
For reaching a NAS or a camera from the road, run a mesh: Headscale lets you stay on Tailscale clients while the control server sits on your hardware, and Nebula or NetBird cover small teams. When what you want is a private exit located in another country, an installer like Algo or PiVPN on a rented VPS is the shortest path. Censored networks are a different beast: plain WireGuard is recognised by DPI systems, so you need obfuscation. Nineteen entries claim a stealth mode, and VLESS with REALITY (eight entries) hides behind an Xray or sing-box server and looks like ordinary HTTPS. Teams that need logins and access rules should check the team access platforms: Firezone is WireGuard ZTNA with self-hosted gateways, Defguard adds MFA on every connection, Pritunl runs OpenVPN and WireGuard servers. SSO/SAML appears in twelve entries.
What the server side needs
A VPS offering a public IPv4 plus a single open port is enough for WireGuard, which listens on UDP 51820 by default; forward that port if you run a Raspberry Pi at home instead. The Docker images (wg-easy, Wirehole, Dockovpn) still need that open port and the host server. Setups that disguise themselves as web traffic, such as Trojan, NaiveProxy or REALITY panels, additionally need a domain name plus a TLS certificate, typically from Let's Encrypt. Keep SSH keys rather than passwords on the box, and change any default login before the panel faces the internet: S-UI ships with admin/admin.
Own server or paid VPN: the trade-off
You gain control of the keys and the logging, a server nobody else uses, and your pick of country where the VPS stands. You give up anonymity: a single exit IP reserved for you ties every site visit back to your VPS account, with no crowd of other users to hide inside. Every server also gives you a single location, and patching the OS and the VPN software becomes your job. The cost comparison with a subscription lives on the page about running an own VPN server on a VPS.
Where the list warns you
The page shows two kinds of red flags. Six projects store connection IP addresses (Tailscale, ZeroTier, Firezone, Defined Networking, Netrinos, Husarnet), always in a hosted coordination or relay part, so running the coordination server yourself, as Headscale does for Tailscale clients, keeps those connection addresses on your own server. Three more have a public security incident: SoftEther fixed six vulnerabilities including CVE-2023-27395 in June 2023, Libreswan patched four CVEs, and WGDashboard told exposed v4.2.x installs to update. Unmaintained code is a separate warning rather than a red flag: the original X-UI has not had a commit since April 2022, which is why maintained forks like 3X-UI took over. And iodine tunnels traffic over DNS unencrypted, so run a VPN or SSH inside it.
Self-hosted VPN FAQ
Can I host my own VPN for free?
The software, yes. A Raspberry Pi at home avoids the VPS bill as well, but then your exit IP is your home connection.
Is a self-hosted VPN more private than a paid one?
It removes the VPN provider from the picture, because nobody but you runs the server. Websites still see one IP that only you use, which a shared-IP service would hide better.
Can I run a self-hosted VPN in Docker?
Yes, wg-easy and Dockovpn are built for exactly that.
Which setup survives DPI?
Obfuscated protocols. REALITY with a domain on an Xray panel works, or Hysteria2 (supported by 9 entries).
Short answer
One person, a few devices: Algo or PiVPN on a small VPS. Heavy blocking: 3X-UI or Marzban with a domain and REALITY. Your own machines: Headscale at home. In every case the updates are yours.
